Hi Shirley: I was following another Northern Irish family in Scottsdale, PA when I
noticed your posting. From experience I know how difficult it is to track down early
ancestors - especially in Ireland where many records were destroyed.
I was born and raised in Aughnavallog, Rathfriland, County Down and the farmland that
marched on the north side of my father/grandfather/g-grandfather/g-g-grandfather &
g-g-g grandfather belonged to a Chain/Chayne/McChain family. Over the years all these
spellings of the name were used. The names of the males owning the land were John,
William & Alexander - all very common first names there.
Since you do not know a town, townland or exact location of your ancestors from Ireland,
or if any researchers have looked in this area, it may help to have another area to
search.
The earliest records I see are for 1790, but they could have been there sooner. Most
likely they were Ulster Scots (having arrived possibly around 1750 from Scotland). The
house has laid empty since the 1950's and is now just rubble. The PRONI records under
the Wills shows Alexander Chayne as the last occupant - died in 1940.
This may be totally of no use to you, but sometime others searching for their extended
families can add little pieces to your puzzle and give you a new life line after so long
searching.
Contact me if you I can help with this search.
