I agree! Larne is in Northern Ireland. In 1988 I had a researcher in Northern Ireland
research the family tree of John Chaine (1752-Apr 1791) of Portglenone, Co. Antrim,
Northern Ireland, hoping to find a connection to William Chain who died in Tyrone Twp,
Fayette Co., PA, on 20 Jan 1818 AND FOUND NO OBVIOUS CONNECTION.
John Chaine's grandson, James Chaine (1805-1842), was a M.P. (Member of Parliament),
and a man of vision whose dream was to establish Larne, Northern Ireland, as a great
seaport. He inaugurated the ferry service from Larne to Stranraer which was declared open
by the Prince of Wales on Jul 1, 1872. A Chaine Memorial was erected in Larne Harbour in
his honor.
I have the complete genealogy of this family which I have never posted online, and
probably never will. I did, however, send this to another researcher with whom I had been
in touch who, for reasons unknown to me, applied Larne, Ireland, as the birthplace of my
(and our) William Chain of Fayette Co., PA. I spoke to that person who expressed regret at
doing so. That is now rampant on the internet and many people have picked up the error. It
has also morphed into Laine and Laney Creek, Ireland. Perhaps there is an explanation for
that and, if there is, I would love to hear about it.
