An addendum to my earlier post about Isabella McCOY/McILROY.
I had not previously realised that Solomon CHALFIN/CHAFFIN (the father of
the Solomon who married Isabella in Berkeley Co., (W)V in 1803) lived at
Back Creek, Frederick Co., one of two possible locations for the birth of
Isabella McILROY. The other possible location of her family's residence,
Loudon Co., is also adjacent to Berkeley & Frederick Cos. All are quite
near Pennsylvania, which Isabella would report as her birthplace in the
1870 census (perhaps to disassociate herself from Virginia after the Civil
War?--other censuses agree on Virginia for this event). The CHALFINs moved
to Ross Co., Ohio, within a few years of their marriage. Her father,
Daniel, died in Ross Co., 21 May 1813, and her younger sister Jane married
James WATTS there on 27 Feb. 1812. Her brother Daniel enlisted there for
service in the War of 1812 and also appears there in the 1820 census and
other documents.
While I find no specific records of this Isabella other than the bible
recording her birthdate, the coincidence of that (28/9 Feb. 1783), together
with the proximity of the families at two distant locations makes me 96.5%
certain Solomon CHALFIN/CHAFFIN married Isabella McILROY, *not* Isabella
McCOY at Back Creek, Berkeley Co., WV (then Frederick Co., VA) on 21
November 1803.
The bad news is that the ancestry of her parents, Daniel and Rebecca
[PYOTT] McILROY, is uncertain and disputed. It's an, admittedly hesitant,
step, in any case.
