I wish to reply on Jason, William and John. My research leads me to believe that they are
brothers. Last Saturday morning I found that Jason and his sister Harriet Chaffin
received their portion of their father's estate from Levi Winkler-Guardian on the same
day in November 1857. My assumption that these two are brother and sister comes from the
fact that they are listed with Ruthy Chaffin in the 1850 Smith Co. TN Federal Census. What
became of Jason? I can't speculate. I do however know that Harriet came to Pope Co.
IL shortly after the 1860 Smith Co. TN. Census. Had she not, your correspondent
wouldn't be typing this note. She married my Great Grandfather Thomas Travillian
Compton, a native of Wilson Co. TN. in Pope Co. IL 27 Jun 1861.
John Chaffin who had married Elizabeth also came to Pope Co. IL at about the same time.
William apparently went to Franklin Co. IL. After Elizabeth died John married a second
time. He married Polexy Ann Howard nee Compton, the sister of Thomas T. Compton. This
marriage occured in the fall of 1863. By the 1870 Pope Co. IL Census John has died.
At the same time that the Chaffins show up in Pope Co. IL. also comes the family of Thomas
Douglas Gregory and his wife Mary. My Grandfather always stated that he cousins with the
Gregory's of Pope Co. IL. Census records in Smith Co. TN. support the fact that
T.D.'s family was enumerated there both in 1850 and 1860. Also Mary is named as Mary
Chaffin on many Pope Co. IL. death records.
From looking at you data most of last weekend I have but one question
are there any Guardianship records available electronically for Smith Co. TN. for the
period 1850-1857??
