John William Chaffin was born October 8, 1866 in Chestnut
Fork, Bedford County, Virginia, the son of William H.
Chaffin and Emaline L. Overstreet Chaffin.
He married Betty Banks Burnette, the daughter of Marcel
Valentine Burnette and Missouri Ellen Martin Burnette, on
November 19, 1890 in Bedford County.
They had six children, all born in Bedford County, VA:
Gordon C. Chaffin, born Oct 6, 1892
Okie Corbett Chaffin, born March 17, 1894
Hallie J. Chaffin, born Sept 28, 1897
Fred Nelson Chaffin, born March 2, 1899
Ruby R. Chaffin, born June 28, 1903
Hilda K. Chaffin, born June 24, 1907
John died May 20, 1918 in Schoolfield, VA
(later annexed by the city of Danville).

Well Known Schoolfield Man Who Passed Away Monday to be
Buried Today
J. W. Chaffin, of Schoolfield, died at his home on Monday
morning at about 7 a.m. He was taken to the hospital a
few weeks ago, but his condition was so bad that they
removed him home in a few days. He is survived by a wife
and five children, two of which are in national service.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Methodist
Church of Schoolfield Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Mr.
Marshal of that church, assisted by Rev. Mr. Kirtner of
the Baptist Church. Interment will be in Green Hill
Cemetery.
