It seems less likely that he is brother of Amos, Abner and Elias

Thought I should interject that the spelling is dependent upon who took the
census. If two separate census takers took the census from these people,
then the spelling might be different because they both spelled it
differently. During the 18th century people still did not spell all that
well, many not at all, and the census taker would spell it like they heard
it.

Amos Chaffin, b.1768, was my 4great grandfather.
I was wondering if you have learned anymore information since your post.
I'd
certainly be interested if you have.

john fults feels that the father of Abner and Amos was not Joseph, but
rather John
Chaffin, born abt 1747, son of Joshua and Esther Chaffin.
i'm not sure what his proofs were.
the census from 1790 and 1800 Burke NC indicate that there was a Joseph
Chaffin
(Chafen) who apparently died bef. 1790 as his widow Mary Chafen
appears on the census. Also a Joseph Chafen, Jr. is listed. It seems likely
that this Joseph is the son of this Mary. It seems less likely that he is
brother of Amos, Abner and Elias who are shown on the census as Chaffin
rather than Chafen. So, if this Mary is indeed Mary Moor, perhaps she was
not the mother of Amos, Abner and Elias. this is just speculation.
please let me know what you think.
