The 1850 census that you list here shows John Chaffin as having been born in North Carolina. I have always seen Abner's son, John Robert Chaffin, listed as having been born in Jackson County, Tennessee. Are you sure that you are talking about the same John Chaffin?

I am very interested in piggybacking on this wagon. I, too, struggle with Abner's father being Amos. If either of you is willing to share this info with me, please contact me at igarcia(a)knox.net. Thank you, and God bless you.

Lane, this is interesting about John Fults' theory. My grandfather, HC Chaffin (b: 1916) was the son of ROBERT LEE, son of HARVEY C., son of MARTIN THOMAS (Chafen, by the way, on one or two census reports, and then Chaffin), son of ? On-line folks are reporting Martin's father as Abner. HOWEVER, my grandfather maintained that it was JOHN. He did not know any more than that. Is there a way to get in touch with John Fults? I would be VERY interested in clearing this up. Thank you, and God bless you. Janis

I am also having a terrible time with this Amos/Joseph issue. I believe that Martin Thomas Chaffin was the son of Abner who was son of Amos or Joseph or John. I cannot tell. My grandfather maintained that it was John. Some on-line folks have me half-convinced that it is Amos, and then someone elses puts up good reasoning for it being Joseph. What is the name of the book that your mother was bringing to you over two years ago? It would be great to find ANYTHING that would help. God bless you.

I just wanted to let anyone who might be interested, that I am making progress.
First I got a hold of the military defence plans for Chaffin's Bluff. On them I got the exact layout of the farm and the surrounding area & other farms. Then I went to the WV Archives and began searching through the land records.
This is what I found out.
It is located 9.2 miles southeast of Richmond, Virginia, on Osborne Turnpike, on the west side; thence .02 miles from the highway.
I have the owners listed as:
Bernard O. Aiken Aug. 28, 1856 D.B. 62 page 39
D.B. 70 page 22
Susan A. Chaffin Dec.1, 1870 D.B. 87 page 444
Seddon P. Aiken July 16, 1875 D. B. 87page 476
Richard B. Chaffin Dec 31,1875 D. B. 96 page 71
J.G. Schwartz Oct 12, 1916 D.B 97 page 11
So now I'm going to get copies of pages 39,22,444,476 & 71
I'm most interested in page 22 and being the Aiken name shows up between the Chaffin names I wondering if they were retalated. any help would be appreciated.
Take Care
Fran
