Dear list, Jo Lee, Jayne and David,
Finally I am able to see my desk after vacation. Just as I was finishing it
off, we had a bad storm in the Cincinnati area and I run an insurance agency.
OH Well.
I am responing in kind to all three of you who picked up a Chaffin listing of
mine, as well as copying the Chaffin list. I descend from Simon Chaffin,
through his daughter Mary Jane who married Henry H Clay ( a great Grandson of
Mitchell Clay SR). Below is a census listing that shows parentage for Mary
Jane as well as her marriage record:
1850 census Lawrence Co KY
167CHAFFIN,
Simon 58 M Farmer 500 VA
Amanda 39 F VA (unverified sources Amanda Endicott or Amanda French)
Madias C 16 M KY
Anna 15 F KY
Clarinda 22 F KY
William 10 M KY
Nancy Ann 5 F KY
Mary J 4 F KY
Marriage of Mary Jane Chaffin:
Record Book 1A pg 115
Henry H Clay married Mary Jane Chaffin 25 Sept 1866 by A. Stewart JP.
Witnesses Robert Ruggles and wife. Place residence of S. Chaffin.
There are several Chaffin(s) families in the area in the 1830-1850 census and
tax records. It has long been my belief that the various John, William,
Thomas and James etc. were connected, probably brothers or otherwise closely
related. This was due to the census ages and locations as well as their
appearing in the same area at nearly the same time.
Jo Lee, you indicated that your John is my Simon's brother. That is great
news. You also indicate their father was probably a Simon. I find the
following Chaffin families in the Floyd Co census:
Chafen, Christopher 50001011100
Chafin, David 00001000101
Chafin, James 00010010100
Chafin, John 01111001010
Chafin, Jordan 21000120110
Chafin, Milly 10000000011
Chafin, Simon 20001020100
Grouped as follows: Males 1)under 10, 2) 10-16, 3) 16-18. 4) 18-25 5) 26-45
and 6) over 45. The females were grouped in the following ranges: 7)under 10,
8) 10-16, 9) 16-25, 10) 25-45, and 11) over 45. The 11 digits following the
head-of-household name indicates how many people in the given age range lived
in the house. That puts my Simon between 26 and 45, and that matches
perfectly with the 1850 where he is 58.
Based on this my assumption was that Jordan, with one male over 45 could be a
father of the others. To date I have no proof, only a lot of census reports.
Looking at the 1850 you must also consider the fact that John is 65 and his
wife Clarissa is 58. Also in this census is a David, age 71 living with a
wife Mary. In all I find 11 Chaffin families in the 1850 Lawrence and an
additional 9 Chaffin individuals living in other households with a total of
over 50 individuals And that doesn't count the girls who married and had
children. Must have been pretty boring up in those mountains and not much
entertainment.
At any rate, one of the most perplexing things to me is how few researchers
their are on the Chaffin name. Ok, so lets get some conversation going back
and forth and see what we can prove and what we suspect.

Fran,
This question turns out to have a complicated answer. I'll give a brief
response that may be of general interest and then we can continue off-list.
I have copies of two warrants given to Stanley Chaffin as heir-at-law to
John Chaffin. One warrant is over the seal of President James Madison and
describes property in Ohio between the Little Miami and Sciota Rivers--the
Virginia Military Tract. The other refers to lands "set aside for officers
and soldiers of the commonwealth of Virginia" and it states that John
Chaffin served in the Continental line.
These copies were given to me by another researcher and I do not know what
repositories they came from. However, I would guess that the one with the
Presidential seal came from the National Archives and Records
Administration, Record Group 49, and that the other came from the Virginia
State Library and Archives in Richmond, VA.
How Stanley Chaffin--it is usually spelled Standley--was able to obtain two
separate warrants is not clear to me. I should add, incidently, that one can
infer from these warrants that Standley was the elder brother of John
Chaffin, deceased. The details we can take up off-list.

( My g/d was Theodore Jackson and my dad is James Theodore Sr)
I do not have and e mail address for you but at one time
you asked about the Chaffin Reunion.
It is the first SAT in Aug at Bethel Church outside of
Montecello, Ga (Jasper Co) I can send directions if
needed.
Were you ever at the reunion when it was at Eddie Lee's
(Chaffin) and is your grandfather Roy one of the twin brothers?

My mother is Josephine Chaffin, her father is John Chaffin. She was born in Nicholas County in West Virginia. The only information I know is that apparently her father was 74 years old (this is on the birth certificate) her mother was Melissa Jane Davis. John was from Kentucky and apparently buried in Kentucky. Also I know that she has a half brother his name is Henry Chaffin in West Virginia. I have not been able to contact him. I hope that there is someone who can help me find out about our family history. If anyone knows anything you can e-mail me at rrodgers(a)nctc.com
