I ran across your post when I googled my grandma's father's name. This is my
grandma's obituary. She was an amazing woman.
Mary L. 'Maryl' Lorish
The memorial service for Mary Louise "Maryl" Lorish will be at 9 a.m. Sunday,
July 15, at St. James Episcopal Church in Bozeman, Mont. The Rev. Clark Sherman will
officiate.
Mrs. Lorish, 84, of Portland, formerly of Medford and Bozeman, Mont., died Wednesday (July
4, 2001) in Portland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the PEO Foundation, c/o PEO Chapter AG, 2904 Colter,
Bozeman, MT 59715.
She was born Sept. 13, 1916, in Pomona, Calif., the daughter of Benjamin Chaffey Shepherd
and Mary Carmichael Davis. She received a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture
from the University of Oregon and a master's degree in architecture from Smith
Graduate School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. After college, she joined
Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego to draft three-dimensional drawings for aircraft
construction. The drawings of airplane parts were for workers who couldn't read
blueprints, so they could see how the parts were to be assembled.
On Jan. 31, 1942, in Pomona, Calif., she married Dr. Fred C. Lorish, who survives. They
lived in Medford from 1948 to 1989.
Mrs. Lorish was a landscape architect in Medford. She practiced landscape architecture on
a freelance basis.
She was a founding member of the Rogue Valley Art Association, a member and past president
of PEO Chapter AA in Medford, and a longtime supporter of the Britt Festival, especially
during the first year. She worked with the late Edith Eden on the Medford Street
Committee, when tree varieties were selected for each Medford street, to assist in future
planning.
Mrs. Lorish was a 30-year member of the Altar Guild of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
She enjoyed gardening, painting, weaving and spinning.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Fred and Tom; a daughter, Mary
Lorish Jahn; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ben and
Phil Shepherd.
