Gary:
Astronaut Roger B. Chaffee was a Lieutenant Commander
in the U.S. Navy and originally selected to NASA's
Apollo program in 1963. Lieutenant Commander Chaffee
was born February 15, 1935, in Grand Rapids, Michigan
and received a bachelor of science degree in
aeronautical engineering from Purdue University in
1957. He died January 27, 1967 at NASA John F. Kennedy
Space Center, Florida, in the Apollo 1 fire.
Parents: Don & Blanche "Mike" Chaffee
Marital Status: Married the former Martha L. Horn.
Children: Sheryl L. (born November 17, 1958) and
Stephen B.(July 3, 1961).
Other Activities: His hobbies included guns and
woodworking.
Professional Organizations: Member of Tau Beta Pi
(national engineering society), Sigma Gamma Tau, and
Phi Kappa Sigma.
Special Honors: Awarded the Navy Air Medal;
Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
