In my last message I made a typo. My gr. gr. grandfather, Joseph Chaffey was born abt.
1795 (not 1785).
Warning, do not accept what you find on LDS records as gospel, nor in the William H
Chaffee book everyone speaks of. Neither of those sources are 100% correct and some
information in them is absolutely not true.
Thank you Terry for the information. I read in an encyclopedia that Chaffecomb and lots of
land around it had been given to a Bishop (whose name I cannot recall) by Wm. the
Conqueror.
There are numerous versions how the name originated. I have read it came from "Keeper
of the Calves" another from the "Chaff" ie of the part of grain not worth
keeping. Ouch!
One source believes the name first appeared during the Normans invasion. another when the
Scandanavians came upon the scene.
One historian has found fourteen variations(I have found ten of those, at least)
I have read that the Chafe name appears in the Domesday
(Doomsday Book), but I have not as yet gotten to that in my research.
I am actually only attempting to learn the origins of my gr. gr. grandfather, Joseph
Chaffey. I am neither a Genealogist nor an Historian, just determined! (My family calls
it,"stubborn") I am also verbous. Thanks, HMc
