Hi,
I also have an interest in this name, but of the original spelling of CHAFE
and/or CHAFFE (it appears to have changed to CHAFFEE after Thomas went to
USA). Has anyone on the list done any serious research on this name and in
particular, the many mis-spellings of it? Totnes, Devon has a Thomas who
would fit the bill, but the spelling is either CLASE or CLASSE. The
old-fashioned way of writing is very difficult to transcribe and the 'f' was
not only 'doubled at some stage, but was very (VERY) similar to an 's'.
Consequently, although certainly not an authority in any way, shape or form,
believe that many CHAFE, CHAFFE, CHAFFEE surnames could well have been
wrongly transcribed from the original Parish Registers. Also, much of the
IGI was recorded from the transcribed copies rather than from the originals.
No brick-bats please - just thoughts after ploughing through some of the old
original registers in search of my CHAFE/CHAFFE ancestors. Regards,
Isabel.

I started my family tree many years ago in high school and I listed a
William or
Charles as the father<?> of Thomas. I had found their name
during my searches of ships passengers. I appologize that I don't have more
info including the names of the ship or ships. I do remember that the
timing would have made Thomas a child (I think) but he was not listed on the
passenger list. I will try to find out more to fill in the grey areas. I
also found a reference to someone's family tree listing Thomas' wife as
Dorthea Thomas <?>.
