Hi Connie, my 7th cousin twice removed. thanks for email. Kathy Brownston is my 9th cousin
and I don't know if it's once or twice removed. Glad to have you in family.
Unfortunately, wish I could tell you Thomas Chaffe's direct lineage but it's
unknown or else no one has come foward with any concrete evidence to link to Thomas in
England. But, we have to understand the times, i.e. records not the best or no records at
all or records destroyed/lost and name Chaffe could have been Chaffy, Chafy, Chaffie but
from the documents I have seen from Hingham, MA, Thomas Chaffe or Chaffy seems to be the
spellings from that time in the New World, mainly Chaffe though. He may have come over in
1636-37 on "Diligent", "Dove", "Rambler", or
"Hector". Thomas was NOT in Hingham in 1635, according to studies of Hingham
population i.e. The Great Migrations and documents in existence in Hingham, MA. There was
a mistake made by William Chaffee(Chaffee Genealogy Book)because of a mistake by whoever!
was keeping records in Hingham. Instead of 1637, the record-keeper wrote 1635(just once)
but of all research done, July 1637 is first written documentation of Thomas Chaffe
receiving land from Hingham Township and where the land boundries were in relation to
other land holders at that time. There was no Thomas Chaffe in Hingham in 1635. July 1637
is the first time his name is mentioned receiving land grants and where the land was in
relation to his "neighbors". You can see the documents thru LDS Church. Please
contact me anytime. Sincerely, Your Cousin, Terry Chaffee
