Here is a bit of information on at least one origin of the Chaffey surname.
There was a Norman named Hugh who went to England with Emma of Normandy as her
cofidential advisor in 1003, when she married Ethelred the Unready. He was sent out to the
west country (Somerset) as Thane (Earl) of Chaffcombe by Ethelred. Around 1250 one Thomas
of Chaffecombe styled himself Thomas Chafe, and that is the first occurance of the Chaffey
surname (in it's many and various spellings) that I know of. BTW Chaffcomb (this
spelling also varies over the years) is Saxon for breazy valley
