Helen, ran across your message from last year and your are right about the limitations on
the info we have at present from the past. Maybe the name Chafy/Chafe/Chaffe/Chaffee
derives from a number of sources, maybe not just one and "only" source/answer.
The Chaffee Book has some mistakes, granted, but it's about the only collection in
book form that I know of so most of it may be pretty close. Then there are some documents
left in Mass/Conn/Rhode I museums(Hingham Town Clerks Office for one) but the info from
ancient past was more or less word of mouth and handed down and just a very few
"documents" in existence with hints about derivation of name. I would like to
find Thomas Chaffe's line before the New World and I think the answer is not here in
America but in England somewhere where his family line my still be in existence. This one
piece of info may lead to more knowledge of past descendants. If you would like to see my
