CHAFFEE
-MABLE CHAFFEE MCPHERSON,
of 108 Franklin St., Towanda,
died Sunday morning, April 5, 1998,
at the Sayre Sayre, Pa.
Born Aug. 3, 1901, in Potterville, Pa.,
she was the daughter of the late Earl R. and Margaret Conklin Chaffee.
Mrs. McPherson was a graduate of Orwell High School and Mansfield Norman School.
On June 12, 1924, she married J. Vernon McPherson, who preceded her in death on Sept. 22,
1944.
Mable was employed as a teacher in Orwell, LeRaysville, and Towanda for 33 years, 21 of
these years she taught in Towanda Borough from which she retired in 1966. She also served
as registrar of vital records in Towanda Borough for many years.
She was a member of the Towanda First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years,
a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 76, Towanda,
a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, having served as National defense
Chairman and director for many years. She was also a member of the Twentieth Century
Club, Towanda, area and senior citizens, Bradford-Sullivan Retired Teachers Assoc., and
the Pennsylvania State Education Assoc.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Jamie V. and Virginia S. McPherson of
Towanda;
a grandson and his wife, Jay V. and Julie McPherson of Woodstock, Ga.;
a granddaughter and her husband, Heather L. McPherson-Swank and Phillip Swank of
Wyalusing, Pa;
a granddaughter, dawn McPherson and Michael Terascavager of Towanda RR 3; a brother Ward
Chaffee of Beaver, Pa.;
a sister, Rachael Shupe of Beaver, Pa.and St. Petersburg, Fla.;
several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald R. McPherson on April 7, 1934;
three brothers, Herbert L. Chaffee, Dewitt Chaffee and Lyle Chaffee;
and two sisters, Lillian Woodburn and Ina Wakely.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the
Maryott-Bowen funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda with the Rev. Kenneth J. Lynde,
officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Towanda, Pa. The family will
receive friends Tuesday, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The family
suggests memorial donations may be directed to the Towanda Public Library children's
section, 104 Main St., Towanda, Pa. or to the Towanda First Presbyterian Church, 5 Court
St., Towanda, Pa. in Mrs. McPherson's memory. -Towanda Daily review.
