The entry on Thomas in the Chaffee Genealogy states that he was given a two acre house lot
by the town of Hingham, that the town is known to have given such a small lot to
bachelors, and this lot was on Batchellor St.. apparently named for the unmarried fellows
that lived there. Who knows if we will ever know who he married, and when that was.
My memory failed me while I was writing up my entry yesterday. In trying to correct a
mistake I made another one. Annis Martin was Joseph's wife, according to the CG, and
he was only married once.
I am intrigued by the information that I found and posted yesterday. Would love to see
documentation of where Thomas Chaffee was from, and his birth record... and his parents
names, too.
I went to Hingham a few years ago, and saw the Old Ship Church (it is called something
like that). It is very ancient. The CG states that Thomas's house was across the
street from "the old meeting house." I don't know if the author is
indicating the church in this reference. I believe it is a Unitarian Church. I also went
to Hull, but I couldn't get a good sense of where Thomas might have lived.
I am reading Mayflower, by Nathaniel Philbrick. Very good read. It makes the Pilgrims
and the early settlers of Mass. come alive, and much of the story dealing with the 1670s
takes place in the Swansea/Rehoboth area, which the Chaffees were living in during King
Philip's War. Fastinating account. I really recommend it.
