I came across this obit that may be interest to others. It was posted in the
Star Beacon (Ashtabula, Ohio) on October 24, 2000. NOTE: I will be
capitalizing the surnames. The obit was not written that way.
Norman C. CHAFFEE, Sr.
Madison - Norman C. CHAFFEE, Sr. 85, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000 at
Inn-Madison.
Mr. CHAFFEE was born May 21, 1915 in Norwalk, the son of Lillian
(NORMAN) and Marion CHAFFEE.
He married Maudie (JOHNSON) CHAFFEE on Sept. 16, 1938 in Painesville.
Mr. CHAFFEE worked as a machinist at Tapco for 15 years. He also worked
as a superintendent at area golf courses for 35 years, and had worked at IRC
Fibers and Coe Manufacturing.
He was a lifetime member of Northeast Ohio Golf Superintendents, and a
life member of the National Golf Course Superintendents.
A decorated veteran of World War II, Mr. CHAFFEE served in the 45th
Division, which liberated the Dachau concentration camp. He earned the
Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
Mr. CHAFFEE was a 4-H advisor with the Thundering Hooves 4-H Club,
served on the 4-H council, and helped with the saddle horse program at the
Lake County Fair.
He was the Leader marshall for the Fairport Harbor Mardi Gras Parade for
seven years. He also served on the Mentor Baseball Association.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Norman CHAFFEE, Jr. of Madison,
Dale CHAFFEE of Byesville, and Roy CHAFFEE, also of Madison.;11
grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth STILLWAGEN of
Carlsbad, Calif., and Velma PHFIEER of Tulsa, Okla.; and two brothers,
Arthur CHAFFEE of San Diego, Calif., and Marshall CHAFFEE of Silt, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Dorothy
LYBARGER and Patty Jean CHAFFEE.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26
River St., Madison. Burial will be in Mentor cemetery in Mentor.
Calling hours will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral
home.
