Hello Kaye,
I see you're still hunting for your Jonathan!
An idea has occurred to me - perhaps Betty had been previously married.
Sometimes registrars were a bit sloppy in putting the correct name.
Technically, if the mother had been previously married, it should say
formerly (surname) nee (surname). Sometimes they would just put one name,
and we wouldn't know if it was a maiden name or a previous married name.
Very confusing for us researchers!
I think if I were you I would go for the birth certificate - there may be
other information on it to help identify him.
Regards
Marion

Subject: Chadwick Family
I am looking for my gggradfather Jonathan Chadwick born in Bolton 1850
to
Jonathan Chadwick and Betty Cameron. I have contacted the Bolton BMD and
they informed me that there is a Jonathan born in 1850 to a Jonathan
Chadwick but the Betty has a different surname. On Jonathans death
certificate in Australia it states mother Betty Cameron. I have had other
people check the cencus with no luck. I also can not find him arriving in
Australia although he married in 1880 in New South Wales Australia. I
believe his father may have married again and after a disagreement with his
stepmother he left home. He was an engineer so he may have worked his way
out to Australia.
I am happy to buy the birth certificate if I could be sure that is his.
Hope you maybe able to help me.
Regards
Kaye Mount (Australia)
