That is a pretty interesting story. I didn't know that some Chabot's took the
name Shepard. Probably the English speaking people of MA. thought "Chabot"
sounded like "Shepard".
A little bit of history about the Chabot name.
I learned from a book titled "Peter Chabot and His Descendants" by Frank H.
Titus, M.S.M.D. that Pierre, the third son of William IV Fier-a-bras, Count of Poitier and
Duke of Aquitaine, was nicknamed "Chabot", a kind of fish which resembled a
catfish found in the Ohio River. It had a mouth which was capable of swallowing a fish
slightly larger than itself. He was the first Chabot in France. This book also stated
that Peter was the great-grandson of Rollo the Viking warrior. The book can be
down-loaded from the Family Search web-site, Library Catalog section. You also can find
more information at Wikipedia on the Dukedom lineage.
Philip Chabot, Count of Charney, Admiral of France, Lieutenant General of Burgundy and
other titles, childhood friend of King Francis I, coat of arms depicts a yellow shield
with three red chabots on it.
