-- FGS Conference
Last Saturday (Sept. 11th), I attended the
Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) National
Conference in Austin. I had planned to attend all of
the several day events but, due to family
obligations, I was only able spare Saturday to
attend the event.
So, I set my priority to visiting the vendor area.
And that took all-day Saturday! Wow! Another WOW!
There were over 300 booths with every national
genealogical vendor were represented, including,
Ancestry.com, Heritage / ProQuest, LDS Library in
Salt Lake City, book dealers, computer software
vendors, major libraries from across the United
States, National Genealogical Society, Genealogical
Speakers Guild, International Society of Family
History Writers and Editors (ISFHWE), Board for
Certification of Genealogists, and many more!
I walked all of the isles looking for new material.
I did notice a slight decline in new books. There
were of course the standard reference books, guides,
how to do, etc., but there were not many new local
or regional indexes or resource books. However, it
could have been the vendors focused mainly on
generic vs. specialized materials.
Attending the event was well worth the time and
effort. The vendor area had many items of interest.
I was able to meet with Bruce Buzbee of RootsMagic
genealogy software <
http://www.rootsmagic.com/ >
and several others vendors.
-- My Ancestors Research Assistance
One of the most interesting vendors I met during the
day was Holly Hansen of Morgan, Utah. She and her
partner, Jenni Johnson, offer professional
assistance to family researchers. They provide a
friendly, personal service to help you with your
brickwalls or other research project where you need
suggestions or ideas of where or how to proceed with
your research.
You simply complete a query form on their website
<
http://www.myancestorsfound.com/ > and they assign
it to a professional who has expertise with the
particular geographic area or subject. (If you not
able to get on the Internet, write for a form at the
address provided below.)
As a reader of this column, the initial $30.00
consultation fee will be waived for one query by
using the promotional code OLESEP04 when filling out
the query form at the above URL. When you go to the
website, click on "Affordable Email Consultation"
and then select "Click here" in the top paragraph
related to Free Conference Consultation / Promotion
Code.
The deadline to take advantage of this one-time
special offer is Friday, Oct. 8th. Please feel free
to share a copy of this article about this unique
free research offer with your friends, family,
genealogy society members or anyone you think would
be interested.
It works like this: As soon as you contact My
Ancestors Research Assistance for a consultation,
they will assign an experienced researcher to be
your very own consultant.
These consultations are designed to give you
suggestions on where to go next with your research.
Once you receive the suggestions, you can decide to
do the work yourself or request our professional
assistance with the research for a fee. The
researchers are highly experienced and love family
history work.
Holly and Jenni are able to call upon the services
of two outstanding teams of genealogy researchers to
help you:
Family History Library Researchers - These
researchers can visit the LDS Family History Library
in Salt Lake City, Utah, which maintains the world's
largest collection of genealogical records.
Worldwide Researchers They have a team of
researchers in many countries throughout the world
that have an extensive knowledge of, and easy access
to, an enormous amount of original records.
The normal e-mail consultation fees start at $30.00.
If you decide to purchase their professional
research, they will quote the price before the work
is done. They will never proceed with any work until
they have quoted the fee, explained the terms of the
research and received authorization to proceed. They
guarantee not to exceed the quoted fee.
In addition, they also offer free genealogy forms on
their website that you can print-off.
Lastly, My Ancestor host research trips to the LDS
Library in Salt Lake City that include, hotel,
round-trip shuttle to the airport and professional
research assistants to help with you with your
research at the library.
