This is info that I've gleaned from censuses. I hope it helps. I'd appreciate
more information about Maggie, Thomas, and Martin.
Andrew Jackson CENTER (Jackson CENTER), b. Oct. 1873; M. abt. 1897 to Melissa SNIPES, b.
abt. 1883.
1880. Jackson CENTER, Jr. (age 8) lived with his father Jackson CENTER, Sr. (age 39) when
enumerated in 1880 (Kentucky, CARTER, Roll 408 Book 1, Page 495a: EN 13, p. 7, 4 June
1880, household 57/58). His father was married to 26 year-old Martha and they lived with
seven other children: Adaline (age 15), Frank (age 13), Bruce (age 9), Anna (age 6), Cora
(age 6), William (age 3), and Lara Bell (age 1).
1900. Jackson CENTER, Jr. (age 26, b. Oct. 1873) still lived with his father Jackson
CENTER (age 58) during 1900 after the family had moved to Wolfe County (Kentucky, WOLFE,
Clifty, EN 98, MD No. 7, page 86A, household 94/95). His father was with his wife Lena E.
Center (age 49). Four of Jackson Sr.’s other sons also resided with them: William (age
21, b. Dec. 1878), Joseph (age 15, b. September 1884), Breckenridge (age 12, b. November
1887), and Stephen (age 8, b. May 1892). Joseph, Breckenridge, and Stephen were
apparently Jackson’s children by Lena. William apparently had a different mother
(possibly Polly or Mary?) than Jackson Jr., as implied by William’s mother having been
born in Virginia and William’s from Kentucky. Also with them was Jackson CENTER, Jr.’s
daughter Pearlie Center (age 5, b. April 1893). Jackson Jr. was reportedly “disabled”.
1910. Andrew J. CENTER (age 35) lived with his wife Malissie (age 27) in Wolfe County,
Kentucky during 1910 (Kentucky, WOLFE, Precint 1, Roll 504 Book 1, Page 200b, Sheet No.
16B, ED ?, Enumeration date ? May 1910, Household 150/152). They had both married only
once and they had been married 13 years. She had issued five children, all of whom
resided with them: Talbert (age 12), Maggie (age 10), Tommie (age 8), Addie (age 3), and
Pearlie (age 2). [Note: This suggests that the granddaughter Pearlie enumerated with
Jackson’s father during 1900 wasn’t Jackson Jr.’s daughter]. All birthplaces, including
those of the subjects’ parents, were indicated to have been in Kentucky. Andrew and his
oldest son Talbert were laborers in a lumber mill. Maggie did housework in their home.
They lived next door to Logan CENTER (household 151/152, age 26) and his wife Fanny [?]
(age 23).
Children of Andrew Jackson and Melissa CENTER:
1. Talbert, b. 1897
2. Maggie, b. 1899
3. Tommie, b. 1901
4. Addie, b. 1904
5. Pearlie, b. 1907
6. Martin, b. 1911
7. Eva, b. 1916
1920. Andy CENTERS (age 47) and his wife Malissa (age 39) lived in a house that they
owned free of a mortgage on Third Street in Prestonburg, Kentucky during January 1920
(Kentucky, FLOYD, Prestonburg town, District 1, Roll 569 Book 2, Page 6a, ED No. 1, Sheet
5A, Enumeration Date 6 January 1920, Household 115/127). Andy’s birthplace was listed as
Kentucky while Malissa’s was shown to have been in Virginia. Andy’s parent’s birthplaces
were also shown to have been in Kentucky whereas Malissa’s were indicated only as in the
“United States”. Andy’s occupation was that of a miner in a coal mine. Children that
resided in the household were Tolbert (age 23, married), Della (daughter-in-law, age 19),
Maggie (age 20, married), Melvin TOLVERS (son-in-law, age 23), Thomas (age 17), Addie (age
16), Pearl (age 13), Martin (age 9), and Eva (age 4). All birthplaces of the children and
in-laws and their fathers were sho!
wn to have been in Kentucky. Birthplaces of their mothers were less consistent.
Tolbert’s mother was shown to have been born in Virginia, Della’s mother’s birthplace was
only the United States. The mother’s birthplaces of the rest were indicated to have been
in Kentucky, suggesting that Malissa was Tolbert’s mother but not the mother of Maggie,
Thomas, Addie, Pearl, Martin, or Eva inasmuch as Malissa’s birthplace was Virginia.
Tolbert worked as a machinist in a coal mine and both Melvin TOLVERS and Thomas CENTERS
were coal miners.
1930. Andrew J. CENTERS (age 56) and his wife Mellissa (age 48) lived at 10 Front Street
in Fleming, Kentucky during April 1930 (Year: 1930; Census Place: Fleming, Letcher,
Kentucky; Roll: 766; Sheet 1B; Enumeration District: 67-22; Image: 2.0, Enumerated 2
April 1930, Household 10/12). The census showed that Andrew first married when he was 21
years old and Mellissa when she was 16. They were both reportedly born in Kentucky as
were both of their parents. Andrew’s occupation was indicated as a “commercial traveler”
in the field of “Drugs”, probably a drug salesman. A daughter Eva (age 14, b. Kentucky)
lived with them as did Andrew’s brother William C. CENTERS (age 56) who was a widower and
a laborer in coal mines. Two boarders also resided in the household: John Holloway (age
36) and James Bost (Greek, age 37).
