Wilford Cecil was of English ancestry and would have been 23 y/o in 1810. Existing
records indicate that those coming to KY with the CECIL/CISSELL surname initially came
from soutern MD. James Combs, who was the bondsman for Wilford and Mary Martin
Cecil's 1812 KY marriage, came from St. Mary's Co. MD and was in KY by 1807.
Early Catholic records in KY note that CECIL/CISSELL families were among a league of 60
families formed in MD who pledged to emigrate to KY over a period of time starting in
1785.
Those currently involved with DNA testing have learned that the early CECILs and CISSELs
were related.
Although not documented in her "Early Families of Maryland", Elise Greenup
Jourdan later concluded that Wilford Cecil's father may have been a Benedict Cecil of
St. Mary's Co. MD. Wilford's first-born son (b. 1812 in KY) was named Benedict
along with several other of his descendants.
