William ,Hello.
I wish I could be of help, but my extensive list of Cecil family names does not include
a Drayton nor a Walpole and although I have at least 55 John Cecils, not one of them was
born 1805 in England or SC. I also am missing your Rudolphus who was a CSA soldier.
Sounds as if you have an interesting line. My husband's line is
William>John[Prince George County,MD]>Samuel[MD]>Zachariah[MD]>Samuel[
Montgomery CoVA]>James Harvey[VA-d. TN]>Samuel Shelby[TN]> Arthur R.[TN]>
Richard, my husband.
When you mention the "Robert Cecil line": the earliest Robert I have is the
second son of William ,Lord Burghley who became the 1st Earl Salisbury [1563-1612]
Is that the "Robert Line" you mean and "7th in line" for what?
I can send you the descendants I have for this man [about 10 generations] from Lord
David's fine book on them, but you will see there no mention of your John Henry, and
of course no mention either of my husband's ancestor William , b. abt. 1665, whose 2
sons John and Phillip are responsible for so many American Cecils. Our William's
parentage is a mystery still.
There are however in this lineage a number of "younger sons' in different
generations who MIGHT have founded an American line, since THEIR descendants are not so
carefully charted as are the ones who lived and still live in Hatfield House---the 1st
through 6th Earl, and then [a promotion for the 7th Earl] the first through the present 7h
Marquess of Salisbury, whom I believe is 58 year old Robert Michael James Gascoyne
Cecil.
Although there may be no connection, or perhaps only the most remote,
of my husband to this line, I have enjoyed reading of its history, and speculating as to
where the younger brothers and sisters may have gone.
Happy hunting.

Subject: Cecil family of Maryland
Hello Steph:
Like so many others I too am having problems with my Cecil family and it may be because
some were born out of wedlock or records were destroyed in the Civil War.
I am in hopes you can help me with a lookup or maybe you have first hand information on
my Cecil family?
CECIL, John Henry, b. Nov. 1805 Eng. or poss. S.C.; d. Oct. 1865.
married Mary DRAYTON abt. 1845, S.C., b. Apr. 1811, Charleston, SC, d. March 1847.
They had 2 children:
1. Annie Drayton CECIL, b. 18 Nov. 1846, Charleston, SC, d. Jan 1915, Chicago, ILL.
married Francis X. HOLBROOK, July 1870, Baltimore, MD.
2. Ernest Walpole CECIL, b. abt. 1847, married Elizabeth NASH July 1870, Baltimore, MD
and she was born in VA.
The above Mary Drayton was supposedly a descendant of William Henry DRAYTON of
Charleston, SC, but I have never found any data on her and she may have been born out of
wedlock. Also, I have never found any data on John Henry CECIL and somewhere I saw where
someone had speculated he may have been using a false name.
I know the above children had a cousin who fought for the CSA with the Maryland and
Virginia !st Cav., was a 1st Lt.and that he was killed in action. his name was Rudolphus
CECIL.
And last all the above Cecil's were supposed to have come from the Robert CECIL line
and were 7th in line with the above John Henry.
Thank you,
Bill Purcell
