So, you are saying Happy99.exe is real? What is it?
YES!
It's an email worm (don't ask -- just passing along what I've been told)
that infiltrates your email program. It then attaches itself to any mail
you send out. Usually someone you email will get a second message, with the
virus attached.
It has been wreaking havoc all over the net. The first I heard of it was
on another of my favorite haunts, alt.binaries.clip-art. And then several
of my listers on Pictou Roots told me they had been sent it by unsuspecting
friends who were infected.
I think I still have a little little program to protect your hard drive
from infestation. It's called Sockfool. It sets up dummy files to make the
virus think it's already installed.
Another sure fire way of protecting yourself is to NOT execute executable
files you find on your hard drive that you aen't sure of. If you should
happen to find happy99.exe in your mailbox do NOT click on it. Those who
have says it displays fireworks and a Happy New Year graphic -- while it's
infecting your hard drive.
Be careful of this one. I'll try to find the dummy program, but no
guarantees since my crash. ;-{
