Hello .
Hello Cecil researchers.
I purchased this book written by Lord David Cecil [1902 - after 1980] in
1973 from the good ol' BOMC. My husband and I visited Hatfield House in 1976
and do reccomend a visit there.
This book primarily chronicles the decendants of William Cecil , Lord
Burghley [1520- 1598] Prime Minister to Queen Elizabeth I, through his
second son Robert Cecil, 1st Earl Salisbury,
[1563-1612].
From there we go through seven generations to James Cecil 7th Earl, who
was elevated to 1st Marquess of Salisbury [1748-1823] and through his
grandson Robert Cecil ,3rd Marquess [1830-1903] who was Prime Minister to
Queen Victoria from 1885 to 1902.
Lord David was this Prime minister's grandson and his family tree in the
book ends with himself and his brother Robert, the 5th Marquess [1893-
1972] and their three sisters.
Does anyone on the list have a suggestion as to where I might find
listed the generations since then, including the names of the 6th Marquess
and Marchioness and Lord David's children if any?
I don't believe he made an update before his death in the 1980s but am not
sure.
He did mention in the beginning Baron Burghley's lst son, [by a lst
marriage ] Thomas Cecil, 1st Earl Exeter.[1542-1623] ----who may or may not
be the progenitor of our American Cecil Lines.
The book is more interesting for nearly 400 years of English History,
through the eyes of a Ruling Class family. Although it does NOT appear that
we have any claim to decendancy through the Salisbury/ Hatfield House Line
,We can probably claim distant cousinship.
