I just received a fabulous book in the mail --
Margaret R. Waters, Dorothy Riker, Doris Leistner, Abstracts of Obituaries in the Western
Christian Advocate* 1834-1850 (Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society, 1988).
*Published in Cincinnati, OH, by the Methodist Book Concern beginning May 2, 1834;
obituaries numbered as many as twenty in some issues of the paper and were not limited to
Methodists; although most of the deaths reported were in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and
other middle western states, deaths in other states were reported as well; a relative or a
minister acquainted with the deceased usually contributed the obituary.
It is available through
Amazon.com
Among the few names that I recognize is this one --
WITTEN, Eleanor; d 10-Apr-36, past 80, 3 mi below Tazewell CourtHouse, VA; dau. of Cecil,
Mr.; mar. Witten, Thomas. Her bro. Cecil, William mar. Thomas Witten's sis. Nancy
Witten on same day. [v.3 p.20; 27-May-36]
I searched through the files for this family at RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project and
only about 50% of them have the April 10th dod for Eleanor, and few if any had a brother
William for her.
I know a professional researcher in Indiana who has access to the microfilm of the Western
Christian Advocate and will retrieve printouts of these obituaries for $5 each. Write me
privately for her name and address (please do NOT ask through this forum; I live in
another state).
