Anita,
I do have a few comments for your tree and hope they will be of some help.
My main research efforts have been with the John
Cecill/Cissell (c1639-1698) who came to Maryland
about 1658 [see the Maryland Land Records Liber
4, folio 29] and some of his descendent
lines. Over the last 35 years or so, I have
spent time at the Maryland Hall of Records in
Annapolis and also at various libraries and
record centers in the UK looking for records
about him. To date, I am aware of no records to
tie the Cecils/Cissells of St. Marys County
Maryland with the well known Cecil family in
England. Even more frustrating is that we do not
have any records identifying where in England this family really did came from!
My specific comments to your tree are provided in [ ]s below:
1. Sir Knight Thomas Cecil/Cissell (1578-1662) + Susan Oxenbridge (1617-
between 1640 & 1678) (Unknown) [Again, I am
aware of no records to show that Sir Thomas Cecil
was related to any of the Cecils/Cissells in St.
Marys County Maryland. . In the absence of
known records, we have over the past two years
been trying to use DNA testing to see if the two
families might be related anyway, but we have not
been able to get samples yet from any of the UK
descendants of Sir Thomas Cecil. Accordingly, I
dont think we should claim this connection.]
2. John Baptist Cissell (1639-c. 1698) + Mary Shircliffe (c. 1640-c. 1712)
(John Shircliffe-Ann Spinke) [The Cecill/Cissell
who came to Maryland about 1658 and who died
there in 1698 was not named John Baptist. His
arrival records and his final Will identify him
solely as John. I think that John Baptist
may have arrived (or been born) in St. Marys
County at some later date and he should not be
confused with this earlier John Cecill/Cissell (ca 1639-1698).]
[John Cissells Will and other records identify
his wife only as Mary. A number of researchers
have argued that Mary was really Mary Shircliffe,
as you indicate. I cannot claim that this
argument has been proved, but I do have a few
circumstantial reasons for thinking that this
might have been the case. I have two
observations in this area: The first is that in
the Land Records where John Cecill/Cissell asks
for land for transporting himself to the Colony,
the record just above his (and dated the very
same day) is a request from John Shircliffe for
transporting others to the Colony. (John
Shircliffe was older than John Cissell and so in
my minds eye I have always imagined John
Shircliffe taking John Cissell to the Records
Office with him and helping him to apply for land
in the County. this is just my interpretation
of the records and so it does not necessarily
prove anything!) The second is that John
Cissell's original land called Broadneck was
located right next to the land of John Shircliffe
and so both families must have known each other very well.]
3. James Cissell (c. 1680-c. 1717) + Rachel Adams (c. 1670-c. 1717)
(Unknown) [I have James Cissells wife as Mary
____. And they did have a son named James. I
dont think Rachel belongs in this tree.]
4. James Cissell (c. 1710-1785) + Margaret Vowles (c. 1715- after 1788)
(John and Elizabeth Cooke Vowles) [As indicated
above, James and Mary ____ did have a son named
James (ca 1703-1785) and I think this is who you
mean to have here. His wife was Elizabeth
____. James and Elizabeth did have a son named
Ignatius (1734-1788). Accordingly, I dont think Margaret belongs here.]
5. Ignatius Cissell (c.1735-after 1788) +
Elizabeth UNKNOWN [I think Ignatius was born in
1734. He and Elizabeth ____ did apparently have
a son named James Rodolph Cissell.]
6. James Cissell ( ? -1833) + Susannah Williams Hammett c. 1784- ? )
(Robert McKelvie and Ann Williams Hammett) [This
is a line that I have not researched, but I
understand that James Rodolph Cissell was born in
1762 and died in 1834. I have no information on
his wife or children, but suspect that others on this group do.]
7. Elizabeth "Eliza" Louise Cissell (1816-1898) + James Maddison Ballard
(1816-1903) [I have no information on this line.]
Cheers and good luck with your research efforts.
Dave Cissell

I've been away for my research for a few years
due to health problems, so my apologies if I'm
repeating an old question. Listed below is what I
think is my Cissell ancestry, but I know there's
been a lot of confusion with so many Johns and
Jameses. I've been reading the St. Marys, MD list
and there is also some controversy about John
Baptist Cissell (#2 below) marrying Mary
Shircliffe. I'd appreciate help from fellow
Cissell researchers in correcting any mistakes in
this branch of my tree, including a listing of supporting evidence.
Thanks.
