Dear Cecil Genealogists,
I have no proof, only pulling from the research of others, but I believe that this family
did come from the Cecils of England. My research goes further back than Sir Thomas
Knight. See my research below:

Subject: Re: [CECIL] John Baptist Cissell (1639-c.1698) (buckeyegal)
nita,
I do have a few comments for your tree and hope they will be of some help.
My main research efforts have been with the John
ecill/Cissell (c1639-1698) who came to Maryland
bout 1658 [see the Maryland Land Records Liber
, folio 29] and some of his descendent
ines. Over the last 35 years or so, I have
pent time at the Maryland Hall of Records in
nnapolis and also at various libraries and
ecord centers in the UK looking for records
bout him. To date, I am aware of no records to
ie the Cecils/Cissells of St. Mary’s County
aryland with the well known Cecil family in
ngland. Even more frustrating is that we do not
ave any records identifying where in England this family really did came from!
My specific comments to your tree are provided in [ ]s below:
1. Sir Knight Thomas Cecil/Cissell (1578-1662) + Susan Oxenbridge (1617-
etween 1640 & 1678) (Unknown) [Again, I am
ware of no records to show that Sir Thomas Cecil
as related to any of the Cecils/Cissells in St.
ary’s County Maryland. . In the absence of
nown records, we have over the past two years
een trying to use DNA testing to see if the two
amilies might be related anyway, but we have not
een able to get samples yet from any of the UK
escendants of Sir Thomas Cecil. Accordingly, I
on’t think we should claim this connection.]
2. John Baptist Cissell (1639-c. 1698) + Mary Shircliffe (c. 1640-c. 1712)
John Shircliffe-Ann Spinke) [The Cecill/Cissell
ho came to Maryland about 1658 and who died
here in 1698 was not named “John Baptist”. His
rrival records and his final Will identify him
olely as “John”. I think that “John Baptist”
ay have arrived (or been born) in St. Mary’s
ounty at some later date and he should not be
onfused with this earlier John Cecill/Cissell (ca 1639-1698).]
[John Cissell’s Will and other records identify
is wife only as Mary”. A number of researchers
ave argued that Mary was really Mary Shircliffe,
s you indicate. I cannot claim that this
rgument has been proved, but I do have a few
ircumstantial reasons for thinking that this
ight have been the case. I have two
bservations in this area: The first is that in
he Land Records where John Cecill/Cissell asks
or land for transporting himself to the Colony,
he record just above his (and dated the very
ame day) is a request from John Shircliffe for
ransporting others to the Colony. (John
hircliffe was older than John Cissell and so in
y mind’s eye I have always imagined John
hircliffe taking John Cissell to the Records
ffice with him and helping him to apply for land
n the County. – this is just my interpretation
f the records and so it does not necessarily
rove anything!) The second is that John
issell's original land called “Broadneck” was
ocated right next to the land of John Shircliffe
nd so both families must have known each other very well.]
3. James Cissell (c. 1680-c. 1717) + Rachel Adams (c. 1670-c. 1717)
Unknown) [I have James Cissell’s wife as Mary
___. And they did have a son named James. I
on’t think Rachel belongs in this tree.]
4. James Cissell (c. 1710-1785) + Margaret Vowles (c. 1715- after 1788)
John and Elizabeth Cooke Vowles) [As indicated
bove, James and Mary ____ did have a son named
ames (ca 1703-1785) and I think this is who you
ean to have here. His wife was Elizabeth
___. James and Elizabeth did have a son named
gnatius (1734-1788). Accordingly, I don’t think Margaret belongs here.]
5. Ignatius Cissell (c.1735-after 1788) +
lizabeth UNKNOWN [I think Ignatius was born in
734. He and Elizabeth ____ did apparently have
son named “James Rodolph Cissell”.]
6. James Cissell ( ? -1833) + Susannah Williams Hammett c. 1784- ? )
Robert McKelvie and Ann Williams Hammett) [This
s a line that I have not researched, but I
nderstand that James Rodolph Cissell was born in
762 and died in 1834. I have no information on
is wife or children, but suspect that others on this group do.]
7. Elizabeth "Eliza" Louise Cissell (1816-1898) + James Maddison Ballard
1816-1903) [I have no information on this line.]
Cheers and good luck with your research efforts.
Dave Cissell

I've been away for my research for a few years
ue to health problems, so my apologies if I'm
epeating an old question. Listed below is what I
hink is my Cissell ancestry, but I know there's
een a lot of confusion with so many Johns and
ameses. I've been reading the St. Marys, MD list
nd there is also some controversy about John
aptist Cissell (#2 below) marrying Mary
hircliffe. I'd appreciate help from fellow
issell researchers in correcting any mistakes in
his branch of my tree, including a listing of supporting evidence.
Thanks.
nita
