Thank you for the very interesting bio., Lynn. They are never boring.
I think they are fascinating-just wish you would have posted the entire
thing. It was great.
As for the generation problem with William-our Vanzandt bio one here in
Iowa has my husband's grandfather saying his grandfather Joseph fought
in the Rev. War. His grandfather was Joseph but it was several
generations previous to that when a Joseph fought in the revolution.
They're still fun to read. They give such insight into their
personality.
I can clear up one problem:
Cecil, Louisa J. married Jeffries, Oliver 4 Sept. 1873 McDonough Co. Ill
William Shanks married Mrs. Jane Jeffries 4 July 1888 Adams co. Illinois
I, too have spent a lot of time looking for a first marriage for
Frances-no luck.
Donna
Randy,
Thanks for your response. I, too, have Benjamin Cecil and Osse Kennedy as
Reuben Cecil's parents. Have been stuck, though with his wife. My
husband's cousin, who has been doing this line for years, is stuck with this
point also. Since we have two Frances.......are there two or could she have
been married before? thus the Sapp and Fortner......one being a maiden
name? But she would have seemed rather young to be mother to Henry A. On
the pension paper affidavit where is says sworn person is not
related.......that part, not related, is crossed out.
As to Louisa Jane m. to William Shanks or Oliver Jeffries....I had no prior
information on this. Was only quoting from the interview in Kansas and
Kansans. Dr. William Cecil would have been about 68 years at this
time.....was his memory not quite as reliable. He seemed, from the article,
to be going full steam.
I hope this open up some discussion.....the list has been much tooooo quiet.

Lynn -
I have a number of discrepancies with the information you provided.
The error may be on my part, since I do not have original sources for
this line. I would like the group to provide some feedback, so we can
reach some consensus on this line.

I have the father of William as Reuben (b.c.1825), and his
grandparents as Benjamin CECIL (~1794~1830) and Ossie KENNEDY.
William (b.c.1755) who married Rachel was instead the
great-grandfather. Do I have this wrong?

I had Reuben married possibly twice (but maybe not) with an
undetermined mother for Henry Austin CECIL, and the other eight as
children of Frances Upranio SAPP. Is Ms. Sapp and Fortner the same?
Was Fortner the mother of Henry?

I have Louisa Jane as marrying 4 Sep 1873 Oliver JEFFRIES, and they
had two children Thomas A. (b.c.1875) and Luther (b.c.1877). Was
William SHANKS a second marriage?

Hello List,
At last, I have something I can share.......Donna just posted the
information on the decendants of William Cecil, Jr. including Henry Austin
CECIL. Henry was my husband's great-grandfather through Henry's son Charles
Ernest. I have, just this week, received Henry's application for pension
following his service in the Civil War.
To summarize...affidavit sworn by Mrs. Harriet Miller that she was present
with Mrs. Cecil at birth of second
child which occured about January 1868, and has since learned that the child
was named Martha Frances.
Affidavit sworn by Mrs. Frances (Mrs. Reuben?) Cecil, aged 60 years of the
township of Lemoine, McDonough, State of Illinois. She is well acquainted
with Mary Ann Cecil (Morris) who was the lawful wedded wife of Henry A.
Cecil, late of Company G 72nd Illinois Volunteers and that she was present
at the birth of two of the children of said parents to wit at the birth of
Charles Ernest born 18 August 1874 and Mary (?) Lulu born 16 November 1876
at which time they resided near me in Lamoine township.
Affidavit sworn by J.G. Follin, M.D. that on the fourteenth day of January
1872 I was called to visit Mrs. Cecil the wife of Henry A. Cecil, in a
confinement at which time there was borne a healthy living child the sex of
which I do not now remember.
Also included was a certificate of marriage to certify that Mr. Henry A.
Cecil was married to Miss Mary A. Morris in Hancock County Illinois on the
21st day of December AD 1865 by M. A. Herves a minister of the Gospel.
At some point following Henry's death Mary Ann remarried to John Hunter who
also was on a Civil War Pension. John died 29 July 1909 in Kansas where
they were living.
Also, in Volume 4 of Kansas and Kansans.....to summarize:
William C. Cecil, M.D. A really successful merchant doctor, lawyer or
farmer........that kind of success which is enjoyed by Dr. Cecil of Stark,
Kansas. He was the pioneer doctor in that community and for 30 years has
given his services to rich and poor.....Dr. Cecil's grandfather, William
Cecil, was born in Cecil County Maryland and moved from there to North
Carolina and died about 1828 when his son Reuben was six months old.
Reuben was married in Hancock County, Illinois and for many years followed
the trade of blacksmith. Reuben married Frances Fortner. She was born in
1830 and died at Cholchester, Hancock, Ill in 1911. Reuben and his wife had
nine children. Henry A. a farmer, Margaret, wife of Wilburn Melton, Dr.
Cecil, Thomas L. a carpenter and contractor at Bazine, Kansas, Sarah married
to Dr. V. P. Stookey in Colchester, Louisa Jane married to William Shanks,
living in Wisconsin, A.W. a hardware merchant at Elmwood, Kansas, Perry a
truck gardener in Washington State and Ella married to Grant Jeffreys and
living in Nebraska.
Dr. Cecil was born at Plymouth, Hancock, Illinois 15 November
1850........Dr. Cecil has been twice married: in 1868 in Illinois to Sarah
E. Robinson. On 15 May 1912 to Nell Rumbeck. .........etc.
More probably than any of you wanted to know but I was excited to get all
this information. I'm still pretty new at this. This issue of Kansas and
Kansans was published in 1918 while Dr. William Cecil was still alive.

I don't have parents for Silas and Martha Jane Mayes. The IGI does give 18 May 1845 or 8 Apr.
1845 for Margaret Catherine their daughter and 24 Dec. 1849 for George Raphael their son and
chr. 18 Apr. 1852 for Frances Elizabeth at Union Co. St. Vincent.

Silas Cicil 38 Kentucky
Martha 32 Ky
Margaret 19 Kentucky
William W. 13 Kentucky
George 10 Kentucky
Frances 8 Kentucky
Martha E. 4 Kentucky
John J. 1/12 Kentucky
The only clue might be:
1860 Hickman Co. KY pg. 535
C. Cecil 35
Catherine 23
Margarette A. 5
Mary F. 21
Isaac W. 1/12
There might be a connection to Lewis and Narius Cissel who married Anastastis Blandford and/or
Joseph who married Harriet (Ann) Bowles. It looks like Joseph had a Frances age 11 in 1850 and
his wife is dead by 1860-but the child could have married etc. just a thought.

There is no doubt that Daniel Jarret Cecil's marriage to Sarah Cecil was
one of first cousins but Sarah's parents have not been determined with
proof. Both Phillip and Thomas of the fourth generation were in N.C.
and had daughters whose ages would coincide with Sarah's age. The
tombstone to Sarah's memory stands in Spring Hill Cem. close to High
Point N.C. and the tiny stone for Daniel Jarret Cecil was discovered in
a tiny and completely overgrown private burial plot on the farm of Mr.
Loggins near High Point. There are some 10-15 graves there, but marked
only by fieldstone. Until the discovery of this stone marked D. Jarrett
Cecil we were faced with the paradox of two names on records but with
dates and other evidence to fit one man. In his brother's will and his
own he is Daniel J. while on marr. record and census he is Jarrett. He
is recalled as "Jarrett" in family records.

Johnson and Pettis County, Missouri Biographical History we find "Geo.
Washington Iames married to Eliz. Cecil who was the daughter of Benjamin
and Osee Cecil, both of whom lived all of their lives in North
Carolina." since William's will names the three eldest children, we are
concerned only with those three. We get the distinct impression that
the many children appearing with Osee in the 1840 census are extras
whose paternity is in question.

I've put this over before but some of the newer members might find it of
interest.
Looking at land records it looks like James S. of Daviess Co. Indiana
was the son
of James Rhodie and a brother to Eleazor.
On 30 Oct. 1838 (but the indenture was ack. 3 Oct. 1838, recorded 19
Oct. 1838)
James S. Cecil and Eliza his wife of Daviess Co. Indiana, heirs and
representatives of James R. Cecil decd. sold to Eleazor S. Cecil of
Bullitt co.
Ky for $50, a certain 150 A. of land lying in Bullitt and Nelson
Counties at the
mouth of the Spring Branch......(Lampkin)
So it looks like the James S. who married Elizabeth Edelen (and 2 other
wives )
was the son of James Rhodie and depending on the land sold a brother to
Eleazor??? Lampkin shows him (Eleazor) and James S. as the sons of James
Rhodie.

Hi Donna
I have spent a few hours looking up details so I could give you what I have
so here goes:
1. The info that my Elizabeth;s mother was Eliza (elizabeth) Edelen cam from
a researcher-Mary McCauley. Prior to this I did not have a a maiden name. I
do know that when her and James s. daughter Eliza was married on 7/17/1832 at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waverly, Union Co., KY the parents were listed.
However no maiden name
2. Eliza Cissell marriied George Wathen on above date (1832), she is
buried at Sacred Heart also.
3. I also show that Elizabeth Edelen Cissell died 10/14/1839 in Martin Co.,
IND
If you look at the Indiana map you can she that Martin co., Ind is not very
far northeast of Union co., KY.
4. As to where James S. was in 1840: maybe martin Co., Ind since his first
wife Elizabeth died there in 1839?
The only child I had listed for James S. and Elizabeth Edelen was my ancesotr
Eliza who married George Wathen. So the info you sent was new to me.
I did not know they had gone to Indiana. So i can continue my search.
Thaank you for that info.
Some of the remaining questions i have not been able to work on. Life has
been very hectic this past year and about the only genealogy i can do is keep
up with monitoring the list and sending out what info i do have. I hope to
get back to it though later this summer
I do have another question though?? Your information shows James S.
Cissell's father as James Randolph Cissell and you show his ancestors back
to a John.
I would love to know where to go for that inof. So when I get started again
I have a spot to look. Would appreciate any info or help.
Your name is very familiar--I think we have corresponded before-what other
families are you working on?
My lines are: DAVENPORT, CISSELL, WATHEN, SYMMES, CHAPMAN, HIGGINS at least
in Western Ky.
Becky
Donna,
You wrote about Charles and Lila. It's possible that the name was Delia
and not Delila....the spelling was hard to read in our old bible. You also
mentioned the name Cardia. We have reference to Charlie and Delia? having
3 children...Robert, Alta, and Cardia. Robert was born @ 1877. I will
have to look through the Nelson county Census and see what I can find.

A.L. Cissell. Among the representative members of this county none are more
favorably known or more highly respected than the above-mentioned gentleman. His
prominence arises from personal worth, which the public is not slow in
recognizing, as well as from distinguished family connections, he being a direct
descendant of Sir Robert Cecil, who was an exile from England on account of
religion, and who first settled Cecil County, Md. Mr. Cissell was born in Barr
Township, Daviess County, Ind., in 1844, and is the son of J.A. Cissell, who came
with his father, James S. Cissell, from Nelson County, Ky., when a boy, and
settled in Indiana. Here James A. Cissell changed his name from Cecil to
Cissell, and so it has since been continued by the Kentucky branch of the
descendants. A.L. Cissell was reared at Loogootee, Ind., until eighteen years of
age, and upon the bursting of the war cloud which had hovered above the country
for so long a time, he enlisted in the Fifty-second Indiana Volunteer Infantry,
and served four years, taking part in the campaign from Fort Donelson to
Mississippi, or Harrisburg, where in 1864 he was severely wounded. He was then
sent to the Overton Hospital in Memphis, and from there home on a furlough. In
August 1864, he returned to the regiment at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., and was
afterward in a fight at Franklin, Mo., with Gen. Price. After this he was put in
charge of the wounded and sent to the marine hospital at St. Louis, where he
remained for some time, later going home to vote. Subsequently he rejoined his
regiment at St. Louis, just from the raid after Gen. Price in Missouri, and from
there accompanied it to Nashville, Tenn., although classed as noncombatant, owing
to the wound in his right shoulder. He was sent to the hospital, and rejoined
his regiment at Montgomery, Ala., just prior to being mustered out at
Indianapolis, Ind., in September, 1865. Mr. Cissell then returned to Loogootee,
Ind., where he rented land of his father, and was there united in marriage to
Miss Sarah C. Brown, daughter of Felix Brown, of Loogootee. In 1869, in company
with his father and brother, Mr. Cissell made a prospecting tour to Mississippi,
County, Ark., and there bought 218 acres of land, while his father bought 160
acres, mostly timber land. The next year they brought their families and settled
on land situated on Carson's Lake, about six miles southwest of Osceola, where he
cleared some 200 acres. There A.L. Cissell remained until 1879, when he engaged
in mercantile business at Osceola, and continued in this for two years, when he
sold out at a loss of $13,000. After paying every cent he was left in debt to
the amount of $928 which, in 1884, he managed to place in the hands of one man.
He then resumed agriculture pursuits, and is now the owner of 505 acres, with 165
under cultivation. In 1888 he was a candidate for sheriff of Mississippi County,
but was defeated, owing to the fact that he left the field in the heat of the
contest to undergo the most trying ordeal which can befall a man, the loss of a
true and loving wife. She died July 9, 1888, leaving three children: Maggie is
Mrs. O.W. Stacey, and now lives on a farm near her father's; Nora is the wife of
J.H. Meyers, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume, and Tilden is at
home. Mr. Cissell is a member of the A. O. U. W., located at Osceola, and is a
member of the Catholic Church, as was also his wife, who died in that faith,
holding membership in the church of St. Mathew, at Osceola.

2HISTORY OF MARSHALL COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA 2
CECIL FAMILY HISTORY pg. 115
The Cecils are generally believed to have come to West Virginia from
Maryland, originally from England.
One of these early residents was Captain William H. Cecil, a boat
builder,
who learned his trade in Western Europe before coming to Moundsville
soon
after 1830, via Maryland and Wheeling. At 14th and Water Street, he and
two
Mason brothers, Sam and Henry, built boats for the Ohio and Mississippi
river trade. These boats when completed were towed to Wheeling, where
steam
engines were installed. At 15th and Water Street he built a large brick
home where his family resided for many years. This house was regarded
as
one of the oldest homes in Moundsville until it was demolished during
the
summer of 1979.
Captain Cecil and his wife, Mary Fish, had at least three daughters.
Two
of them, Nancy and Mary, married his business partners, Sam and Henry
Mason. The other, Emily Virginia married Richard Keane Cresap. Another
early settler was Capt. Cecil's brother, Robert Morrison, born 1793, and
his
wife, Mary Eveline Monteith. They settled on some 500 acres of land in
the
area now known as Cecil and Nixon Ridges. According to the records,
Robert
was a county road supervisor during 1836.
Part of his original 500 acres is still owned by some of his
descendants.
Another small section is a family cemetery on Cecil Ridge, which was
featured in the November 1964 DAR Magazine. Robert's wife was the first
one
buried in this cemetery. He is also buried there. Robert and Eveline
had
five children: William, Isaac, Mary, Nancy and Robert Morrison.
William,
born in 1826, married Hannah Fish and was called "Squire". Records show
that he was a Justice of the Peace. They lived on a large farm on Nixon
Ridge.
William and Hannah had three children, Jeremiah, Elizabeth and Nancy.
Nancy
married Jehu Hood. Their children were Charles, William C. and Roy.
Elizabeth married Dudley Yoho. They had five children, Robert, Elmer,
Carl,
Arthur and Mona. Robert "Bob" was a prominent county surveyor of lands
in
the early 1900's. He surveyed the present Route 2, south of
Moundsville,
which was completed in July 1936. He was also a veteran of the Spanish
American War.
A story has been handed down about their daughter, Elizabeth, that
happened
during the Civil War, when she was about eight years old. She was
playing
in the yard, sewing some scrap materials together, which resembled a
Confederate flag. Some Union soldiers happened along and questioned her
mother closely about the family sympathies. Hannah managed to convince
them
it was innocent child's play. Jeremiah (1847-1933) married Orlena Nixon
(1852-1901) whose family had settled in the same area and at about the
same
time as the Cecils. Jeremiah and Orlena had three sons, Frank,
Benjamin
and Wiley, as well as one daughter, Mary Evelyn Cecil, (1891-1979), who
married Earl Arthur Kelley, a great grandson of John Kelley, who settled
in
Marshall County at about the same time as the Cecils. Mary was my
grandmother. Mary and Earl moved to Huntington, W.Va. in 1920. They
had
two daughters, Mary Velma, born 1919, and Ruth Evelyn in 1920. Both
were
born in Marshall County.
Ruth married Douglas Maynard of Wayne County. They had two children,
Garen Douglas born in 1950, and myself, Donna, born in 1954. I am the
great-great-great granddaughter of Robert and Eveline Cecil who came to
Marshall County more than 150 years ago. Submitted by-Donna Kay Maynard

William Virgil Cecil son of Daniel Columbus Cecil and Lucy Stephens was
born 9/21/1904 and died 11/7/1965. Although he died in Spokane, according
to his birth certificate, he was buried in Gallatin, MO (Daviess county).
Wife's first name was Mary.
An obiturary I have from the Spokane Review lists children: Wilma, Carl,
William, Donald, Virgil Ray, and Daniel. They were scattered across the
western portion of the country.
Virgil was a brother to my grandmother Stella Cecil Morland.
William Virgil was the son of Daniel Columbus Cecil, the son of Joseph
Cecil and Elizabeth Snyder. They were married in Daviess county in 1854.
Elizabeth's sister Amanda was married in Knox county KY in 1853. I cannot
find anything earlier than that on either family.
Hope this helps,
Larry

This sounds like my line or kissing cousins to my line.
My gggrandmother was Eliza Cissell (DOB abt 1816) who died in Union County.
There are some Cissell births. deaths and marriages for Sacred Heart Catholic
Churc, Waverly. Try to get the microfilm and it might help.
Also have you checked the 1880 census for Union County to see if Robert is on
it with his parents?
My gggrandmother Eliza's parents were James S. Cissell and I believe
Elizabeth Edelin although I don't have that marriage documented yet just been
given the info by another researcher. James and Elizabeth were at one time
in Nelson County Ky but that was earlier than you are looking for.
I am descended through Eliza's daughter Louisa Matilda Wathen who married
James Reburn Davenport.
I would like to hear more from you about your search. As I have worked a
great deal in that part of KY as both sides of my family were in that area
for several generations I might have some tips for you.
Becky
Okay, who has a handle on the MO Cecil lines?
