Looking for the family of Mary L. H. Cecil of Caroline County, Virginia
(b. 1813, married 12/22/1835 to Thomas L. Jones) Her husband was from
NJ, but they married and raised 7 children in Caroline County. Her
mother or aunt Elizabeth was living with them in the 1850 census. If
this sounds familiar to anyone, please contact me! Thank you.

I would check the 1860 census index for Ky especially Union Co. for John

Hopefully they stayed in Union co until 1860. Be certain to copy the

I just read Billy Touchstone Hardaway Signer's book, "One Small Drum," about
the Buffalo River Valley's participation in the Civil War in Newton Co., AR.
It's excellent reading (historical novel) from junior high up about the
heroics of Capt. John Cecil, also one of the first sheriffs of Newton Co., AR.
He was a Confederate Robin Hood of sorts for the war-torn hill people and
ravaged countryside. They constantly lived in fear of renegade "bushwhackers"
and Yankee soldiers alike. Many true tales of brother against brother help us
appreciate that historical time and the pioneers of today's luxurious life.
Most of the real family names used were Harp, Villines and Cecil.
As far as I know it's only available from the Newton Co. Historical Soc. in
Jasper. It's a paperback for $10. Their address is on the Newton Co. Web
page under www.usgenweb.com.
Excellent reading!

My bet would be you've got your data base mixed up. You've probably included
some data from a secondary source that had the identity of Russell Cecil's
father
identified incorrectly.
Samuel Cecil, born about 1837/8, son of Benjamin S. Cecil, Jr. and Sarah
Hatfield, had no son named Russell Cecil, born 1852. This is based on an
examination of the census records of AR and CA where he's found living with
his parents in 1860 and 1870 and he's single and no child named Russell is
listed. Furthermore, there is the question of Samuel Cecil's age. As I've
noted before, he would have only been 14 or 15 years old when Russell Cecil
was born. That doesn't even account for the matter of location. The Samuel
Cecil born about 1837 was located in AR and CA. Russell Cecil, born 1852 was
born and raised in KY.
Everything points to this Russell Cecil (born 1852) being the son of Samuel
Cecil (b.1828) and Lucinda Alexander and the grandson of Samuel Cecil and his
second wife, Jane Chrisman.

I have a Russell (b.1 Jul 1852 Albany,KY d.11 Feb 1927 Bryan Co.,OK) m.
Nancy ALEXANDER. He was son of Samuel CECIL (1837-1907), who was son of
Benjamin Sollers CECIL and Sarah "Nellie" HATFIELD
Second, I have Russell CECIL (b.c.1852) son of Samuel CECIL (b.22 May 1828

Both Samuels who fathers of Russell married a Lucinda.
Is this so? What have I got mixed up?

Some discussion has occurred on the list about the birth date of SAMUEL CECIL,
father of Russell Cecil. Let's look at some of the known facts.
RUSSELL CECIL was born in 1852.
He was the son of a Samuel Cecil.
If Russell Cecil was the son of the Samuel Cecil born in 1837, that would mean
Russell Cecil was born when this Samuel Cecil was approximately 15 years old.
Furthermore, the Samuel Cecil who was born about 1837 was the son of Benj. S.
and Sarah (Hatfield) Cecil. This son is clearly not married and living with
his father, and subsequently his widowed mother, as late as 1870 (in CA). N o
child named Russell (b.1852) is in the household.
Clearly, it would appear from all contemporary records, that the Samuel Cecil
born in 1837/8 could NOT be the father of Russell Cecil. Apparently the
identication of this Samuel as the father of Russell has appeared in a
secondary source (Durst/Darst genealogy) and subsequently been perpetuated in
other secondary sources.
Instead of looking at secondary sources, let's look at some primary records
for a moment. Samuel Cecil and his second wife, Jane Chrisman, had a son,
Samuel Cecil who was born 22 May 1828. What's more, this Samuel Cecil appears
in the 1850 Wayne Co., KY Census with his wife, LUCINDA.
It seems to me that it's far more likely that RUSSELL CECIL was the son of
THIS Samuel Cecil (son of Samuel Cecil and Jane Chrisman) rather than the
Samuel Cecil who was the son of Benj. S. Cecil, JR. and Sarah Hatfield.

Based on the respoinses I have received, the Samuel CECIL who m. Lucinda

original documentation that he was born in 1928 [should have said 1829].

If you have noticed, we have been getting a rash of Spam on our lists. My
ISP checked into it. It seems that even as AOL has gotten the VA state
legislature (where they are HQ'd) to pass legislation that includes criminal
penalties for Spammers, they ignore a problem with their own mail servers.
There seems to be some aspect, within their ability to correct, which is
allowing Spammers to back door to the mail server (even though not truly an
aol subscriber themselves) to send out massive Spams. I do forward the Spam
on to the rootsweb folks, but may some of you who are AOL subscribers could
complain. Thanks.
