Sorry it has taken me so long to answer. I had my hard drive
reformatted and got rid of Windows 98 to go back to Windows 95. I have
never seen definite proof that this Isaac, son of John is the same Isaac
but finding them in Fayette Co. PA intermarrying with what might be the
same Morrison family could be a good indication this is the same Isaac.
Now I need to trace the Dickerson family of Muskingum Co., Ohio. to see
if that is the same Whitten/Dickerson family of Coshoc. Co. Ohio. the
Musk. Dickerson/Dickinson family intermarried with our Beatty family.

Donna;
On 2/18/99 you mentioned Isaac and his wife Nancy Morrison Cecil were in
Fayette Co Pa in 1790 and then posted " Descendants of John Cecil" I
can't
find either of these fellows in my FTW which you and the others on this
list
have so beautifully filled out. Could you please give some background
or
connections for them?
Ten months ago I knew only that my husband [Richard Cecil] descended
from
John and Elizabeth Sollers Cecil . The information posted here has gone
from "eye-opening" to "eye-popping" in some cases and is immensely
entertaining, as well as enlightening. Thanks all!!

2HISTORY OF MARSHALL COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA 2
CECIL FAMILY HISTORY pg. 115
The Cecils are generally believed to have come to West Virginia from
Maryland, originally from England.
One of these early residents was Captain William H. Cecil, a boat
builder,
who learned his trade in Western Europe before coming to Moundsville
soon
after 1830, via Maryland and Wheeling. At 14th and Water Street, he and
two
Mason brothers, Sam and Henry, built boats for the Ohio and Mississippi
river trade. These boats when completed were towed to Wheeling, where
steam
engines were installed. At 15th and Water Street he built a large brick
home where his family resided for many years. This house was regarded
as
one of the oldest homes in Moundsville until it was demolished during
the
summer of 1979.
Captain Cecil and his wife, Mary Fish, had at least three daughters.
Two
of them, Nancy and Mary, married his business partners, Sam and Henry
Mason. The other, Emily Virginia married Richard Keane Cresap. Another
early settler was Capt. Cecil's brother, Robert Morrison, born 1793, and
his
wife, Mary Eveline Monteith. They settled on some 500 acres of land in
the
area now known as Cecil and Nixon Ridges. According to the records,
Robert
was a county road supervisor during 1836.
Part of his original 500 acres is still owned by some of his
descendants.
Another small section is a family cemetery on Cecil Ridge, which was
featured in the November 1964 DAR Magazine. Robert's wife was the first
one
buried in this cemetery. He is also buried there. Robert and Eveline
had
five children: William, Isaac, Mary, Nancy and Robert Morrison.
William,
born in 1826, married Hannah Fish and was called "Squire". Records show
that he was a Justice of the Peace. They lived on a large farm on Nixon
Ridge.
William and Hannah had three children, Jeremiah, Elizabeth and Nancy.
Nancy
married Jehu Hood. Their children were Charles, William C. and Roy.
Elizabeth married Dudley Yoho. They had five children, Robert, Elmer,
Carl,
Arthur and Mona. Robert "Bob" was a prominent county surveyor of lands
in
the early 1900's. He surveyed the present Route 2, south of
Moundsville,
which was completed in July 1936. He was also a veteran of the Spanish
American War.
A story has been handed down about their daughter, Elizabeth, that
happened
during the Civil War, when she was about eight years old. She was
playing
in the yard, sewing some scrap materials together, which resembled a
Confederate flag. Some Union soldiers happened along and questioned her
mother closely about the family sympathies. Hannah managed to convince
them
it was innocent child's play. Jeremiah (1847-1933) married Orlena Nixon
(1852-1901) whose family had settled in the same area and at about the
same
time as the Cecils. Jeremiah and Orlena had three sons, Frank,
Benjamin
and Wiley, as well as one daughter, Mary Evelyn Cecil, (1891-1979), who
married Earl Arthur Kelley, a great grandson of John Kelley, who settled
in
Marshall County at about the same time as the Cecils. Mary was my
grandmother. Mary and Earl moved to Huntington, W.Va. in 1920. They
had
two daughters, Mary Velma, born 1919, and Ruth Evelyn in 1920. Both
were
born in Marshall County.
Ruth married Douglas Maynard of Wayne County. They had two children,
Garen Douglas born in 1950, and myself, Donna, born in 1954. I am the
great-great-great granddaughter of Robert and Eveline Cecil who came to
Marshall County more than 150 years ago. Submitted by-Donna Kay Maynard

There is no proof to the father, and I may have two John Baptist Cissell's
mixed up. Matthew was the first born son of what I have as the 2nd marriage.
Why do you think that particular William died in Daviess Co, IN? I thought a
different branch went to IN. I have not had time to focus on the John
Baptist Cissell issue. None of the researcher's who have written books have
been able to document the parentage. It's not Donna Van Zandt's line or it
might be nailed by now. :)

believe William died in ky. ?
General Question: Why do you believe John Babtist Cissell's father was
william...Mary McCulley supports the theory that it was Matthew. There is
much speculation on this subject. I would like to get the facts. Know he

Mary French who married Robert Thompson 2nd married Thomas Cissell (and 3rd
Charles Daft.) This Mary French, b c 1670, and died 21 Aug 1724, was the
daughter of the immigrant James French of Galway, Ireland French's. (In
1671, at the age of 21, James French had his passage from Galway, Ireland,
where his French family was much distinguished, long the Mayors of Galway.
They originated with a Norman family and immigrated to Ireland before 1400
as per Joseph French of Louisville as per letter to Paula Russell,
prussell(a)centuryinter.net.) He married Elizabeth Meekin, d/of William
Meekin and Elizabeth Beard. I do not show an Elizabeth Carberry married to
a James French. Mary was a common name for the Frech family. Mary had 2
brothers, Martin and Francis. I do not have all of their children, but one
of them probably would have named a son James after their father.

There are a couple of things here that are puzzling.
In one place you state Mary French daughter of James French and Elizabeth
Meekin(s) while in another you have Thomas Cissell who md Mary French widow
of Robert Thompson.
-------------
Elizabeth Carberry was mother and James French father is what I have of
Mary French.
===============
Meekin(s) is very common and strong family name in Cecil Co., MD for long
time
however.

Boy am I confused or what? Paul

Roman Catholics from MD to KY and 1st Catholic Church in KY built on his

===============
Meekin(s) is very common and strong family name in Cecil Co., MD for long
time
however.
---------------
Boy am I confused or what? Paul

Now if you want a picture for your scrapbooks of Basil Hayden (the leader of
Roman Catholics from MD to KY and 1st Catholic Church in KY built on his
land)
Picture is on "Old Grand-dad" whiskey bottle.

Another note of minor interest:
My Cecil line (from Benjamin Sollers and Priscilla Cecil's son Joseph) ended
up in Kingston, Madison County, Arkansas. A reserach note reminds me that
David Boydston, son of David and Caroline? Boydston of Tennessee was born Feb
15, 1813. I just had a scribbled note on one of my reserach books...darn,
must learn to reference all of these facts, no matter how insignificant they
seem at the time!

From: Pence234(a)aol.com
It might be good if we all can compare hard data on Priscilla and Benjamin,
and then add our speculations.
I have copy of 1787 Personal Property Tax, Montgomery County. It lists
Benjamin Solace Cecil along with mother Rebecca, brothers James, Thomas,
Zachariah and John. On this page are also Ezekiel and Samuel Cloyd.
Records of the McCorkle's store (which I got from a secondary source, alas) in
Pulaski County, VA, list names from 1774 to beginning of Revolutionary War
which include Samuel Cecil, James Boydston, John Cecil and William Cecil.
Members of Captain Joseph Cloyd's Company sworn in 1777 include James
Boydstone, William Boydstone, Benj. Sol. Cecil, John Cecil, James Boydstone
Junr., Benjamin Prewit (bro in law to these folks?)
These comprise (for me) three very good reasons to accept that Priscilla
Cecil's maiden name was Boydstone, and that her father was probably James
Boydstone.
Now as to secondary info and a moderate amount of speculation:
Samuel Pruitt d., about 1760 in Montgomery Co, MD, married Elizabeth Hawker,
daughter of Robert Hawker and Amy Selby (does Selby ring a bell? It should.
The widow of one William Selby wed Joshua Cecil, who became stepfather to
Elizabeth Sollers' brother Robert some years before).
Samuel and Elizabeth Pruitt had children Samuel Jr., Priscilla (who wed
William Duval), Sarah (who wed David Boylstone ca 1723)), Patience (who wed
Thomas Boydston 1725), and William.
There is also a Mary Pruitt (or Prewitt) who wed James Boydston about 1742.
Some sources say that James was the son of David Boylstone.
Given the fact that families intermarried and that the population of Virginia
was fairly small, it is probable that Priscilla was the daughter of James
Boydston and a Prewitt daughter or grandaughter.
Another source (not original, alas) has cited the following:
James Boydston Sr was born Paisley Green, PA, child of David Boylstone and
Mahala Snow. Mahala died, and David wed as his second wife was Sarah Pruitt.
Somehow the family ended up in Rutherford County, NC where James Boydstone Jr
and Sr. appear in the 1790 census.
David Boylstone and second wife Sarah Pruitt had a son, William Boydstone, who
is the one appearing in Captain Cloyd's Revolutionary War regiment.
Apparently this William was drawing a pension in Cooke County, Tennessee as
late as 1835.
James Boydston Sr. is said to have married a Mary Pruitt...possibly a sister
or niece of his father's second wife?? He died near Russelville, Logan
County, Kentucky on Feb 6, 1814.
Just to confuse things--another informant sent the following:
Priscilla was the child of David Boylston Jr and Sarah Pruitt. David Jr. was
the son of David Boydstone and Mahala Snow, daughter of Jabez Snow and
Elizabeth Paine. Jabez was the son of Jabez Snow Sr., and Elizabeth
Treat...and this Jabez Sr. was born July 6, 1642, on the Mayflower. Hence the
"Mrs. Weaver" story.
"If seven maids with seven mops swept for half a year...do you suppose, the
walrus said, that they could get it clear?" Lewis Carroll
Just an added note: a 1781 Virginia Census lists Benjamin Boydston and
Presley Boydston on p. 1419....wish that I had written down the exact
reference!! More food for thought!

===============
Meekin(s) is very common and strong family name in Cecil Co., MD for long time
however.
---------------
Boy am I confused or what? Paul

Now if you want a picture for your scrapbooks of Basil Hayden (the leader of
Roman Catholics from MD to KY and 1st Catholic Church in KY built on his land)

Anyone have any thoughts on this??

The mere fact that you stated you'd be surprised if Mary could be eliminated
as a possiblity implies strong confidence in your assertion.
Furthermore, even if Cornelius Howard DID have a daughter Mary, that doesn't
connect her to William Cecil or his children. My point was not whether or not
he had a daughter named Mary, but whether she could be associated with the
Cecils.

YES, the Reverend John Gorsuch and his wife, Anne (Lovelace) Gorsuch, did have
a daughter, Elizabeth. I never denied that. I have done a great deal of
research into the Gorsuch family as I am connected to that family through
another line.
No matter if you have found it in print in a secondary source, Elizabeth
Gorsuch, the daughter of the Reverend John Gorsuch, did NOT marry Cornelius
Howard.
The Gorsuch and Lovelace families are outlined in ADVENTURERS OF PURSE AND
PERSON, 3rd Edition. It's a highly respected secondary source with
references. I suggest you consult this source. This book is put out by the
First Families of Virginia, a hereditary society devoted to the first families
that settled in the colony of Virginia. The Gorsuch family was very well
connected in England and very well connected in the colony of VA and MD and
has been well researched.
You quoted extensively from the FHC/LDS Vital Records Index. I'm sure that
you're aware it in itself is a secondary source. It is supposedly an
extraction from primary source records (parish registers, etc.) and I myself
can't state conclusively that it's free from additional information being
inserted by contributors.

Is this the "Mary Howard" in question? If so, in your previous posting, you
stated Mary Howard's mother was Elizabeth Gorsuch. Here, her mother is listed
as being "Mary." I do note that this baptism took place in England at a
time when the Cornelius Howard you referenced in your earlier posting would
have already been in Maryland.
What is the reasoning behind your speculation that the mother of William
Cecil's children was Mary Howard?

Interesting statement and you are intitled to your opinion. Are we geting
a bit testy here? I clearly stated that this situation was speculative in
nature. Pleased to get your attention.

===================
Cornelius Howard was son of Matthew and Anne Howard, becomming the most
distinguished of the Howard Brothers. His first land grant was issued in
1644 for 420 acres and was known as "Howard's Heirship" and the next year
he was granted "Howard's Chance". At a council meeting held on 28 Nov
1661, Cornelius Howard was appointed an Ensign under Captain Thomas Besson.
He paticipated in the Nanticoke Indian War of 1678. From 1671 to 1675 he
represented Anne Arundel Co., in the Assembly. His will dated 15 Apr 1680
was proven in Anne Arundel Co., on 15 Oct 1680. (Wills Liber 2 Folio 107)

You bet it shows a daughter named Mary Howard along with Joseph, Cornelius,
Sarah and Elizabeth. See above.

! Pg. 83-4 FOUNDERS OF ANNE ARUNDEL AND HOWARD COUNTY: A Warfield record,
[of 1804] indicates that "Richard Warfield settled near Annapolis, in
1639." There was no settlement there until 1649 and Richard Warfield was
not one of those settlers. He came among them, however, in 1662 and
located west of Crownsville, Anne Arundel, "in the woods." His estate
reached back to the
beautiful sheet of water--Round Bay, of the Severn. Our Rent rolls show that
he held, during his life, Wayfield, Warfield's Right, Hope, Increase,
Warfield's Plains, Warfield's Forest, Warfield's Addition, Brandy, and
Warfield's Range.
In 1670 he married Elinor, heiress of Captain John Browne of London, who
with his brother Captain Peregrine Browne, ran two of the best equipped
merchant transports between London and Annapolis.
She inherited Hope and Increase two adjoining tracts originally taken up
by Henry Sewell, transferred by him to John Minter, willed by him to his
daughter, Elizabeth, wife of Henry Winchester. These two joined in deeding
them, in 1673, to Captain John Browne, mariner, of London. No further
transfers are to be found, but in 1705, Richard Warfield appeared before
the commission, to restore the burnt record of 1704, and requested a record
of the above history of the property.
In 1675 Richard and Elinor Warfield were summoned as witnesses to the
chancery contest over the will of their immediate neighbor, Nicholas Wyatt.
In 1689 Richard Warfield signed, as a military officer, the address to
King William. In 1696 Richard Warfield's name was returned as one of the
Vestry of St. Ann'e church. This was before the first building was
completed. Dying at an advanced age, in 1703/4, he left an intelligent
will, in which he named his heirs, John, Richard, Alexander, Benjamin, Mary
the late wife of Captain John Howard, Rachel then wife of George Yates;
Elinor the prospective bride of Caleb Dorsey of "Hockley".
---------------------------------
In his old age, he began the first westward movement of the early
settlements to the unexplored frontier of Howard. His sons and executors,
in 1704, resurveyed "Warfield's Range" and increased it to fifteen hundred
acres.

Captain Richard Warfield was transported into Maryland about 1659 by John
Sisson. Warfield completed his service to Sisson in 1669 when he and
Edward Gardner were jointly granted a tract of land called "Gardner's
Warfield". Richard Warfield's land patents extended well over 2,000 acres
including the above named tract and "Warfield's Right", "Warfield's
Forest", "Warfield's Plains", "The Addition", and "Warfield's Range". He
served as a militia officer in the Provincial Forces of Anne Arundel Co., Md.
He married Elinor Browne, daughter of John Browne, a planter of the Severn

project. The information that I was lacking but believe critical is the
physical association of the Cecil and Boydston s in Montgomery County VA. The
lawyers would say we must find motive and opportunity and opportunity is co-
location. What say you with regard to the premise that Benjamin married
Priscilla in Frederick County MD?

Walt,
I have pursued other surname possibilities for Priscilla, wife of Benjamin
Sollers Cecil. As I noted in an earlier posting to the list, Priscilla is
listed as a "Baylor" in only one secondary source I've found. Based on my
research, this is an apparent error. As for "Bileston" I feel it's just a
variation of "Boylston" itself a variation of "Boydstone."
The earliest instance I've found listing Priscilla as a variant of the
surname "Boydston" is in the early 1890s, when the information could very well
have come from her youngest child, Thomas Cecil (d.1893), of Meigs Co., TN who
was still living.
Much of what is found on the Boydston family is not trustworthy. Years ago,
a genealogy of this family was published by a Mrs. Weaver. I have a very
strong feeling she relied on a "researcher" to do the research on her family.
I say this, because the results of this research bear all the hallmarks of one
of the numerous charlatans who were supplying false pedigrees to anyone who
had the money to pay for their "research." The resulting pedigree supplied
Mrs. Weaver was later proven false by succeeding generations of the family who
sought to join the Society of Mayflower Descendants by virtue of the alleged
Mayflower descent outlined by this researcher. Further, serious
investigation shows that the book is seriously flawed, to say the least, and
the connection it vainly tries to pursue between the Boydstone family of VA
and the Boylston family of MA are entirely imaginary.
It is interesting to note that there is a transcript of an affidavit in the
book whereby Mrs. Weaver was to sign her name attesting to the authenticity of
the pedigree (to the best of her knowledge). It appears she never signed it.
Perhaps even she had her own doubts as to the veracity of the statements put
forth in it.
The book also provides dates of birth and death for James and Mary (Prewitt)
Boydston. However, knowing that the book in which they are contained is so
plagued by false statements, I cannot in good conscience accept them as
reliable.
I should also note that a more recent genealogy of the Boydston family has
been published. Although it provides a different outline of the Boydston
family roots, it relies somewhat on the earlier Weaver information regarding
the children of James and Mary (Prewitt) Boydston. Consequently, the book
does not make note of Priscilla Cecil, wife of Benjamin Sollers Cecil. To my
knowledge, their isn't any contemporary record that states the children born
to James and Mary (Prewitt) Boydston (in other words, he left no will, etc).
The earliest reference to their children is the publication by Mrs. Weaver.
I include my earlier posting where I state my theory as to Priscilla
Boydston's parents. It is given below.

In the course of my research, I've come to believe that Priscilla
BOYDSTON/BOYLSTON, wife of Benjamin Sollers Cecil, was probably the daughter
of James BOYDSTON and his wife, Mary Prewitt. Benjamin S. Cecil is found
with members of this family in Montgomery Co., VA. What's more, he aquired
land that had been patented by James Boydston. In early records of Montgomery
County, the name "Boydstone" and "Boylstone" are used interchangably. Some
have speculated that Priscilla might be the daughter of David
Boylston/Boydston, but I feel it's far more likely Priscilla was a daughter of
James and Mary (Prewitt) Boydston.
One more consideration in analyzing my theory is the naming pattern found in
the Benjamin SOllers Cecil family. The two eldest sons of Benjamin Sollers
Cecil were named SAMUEL and JAMES. Would it not make sense that they were
named for their paternal and maternal grandfathers, respectively (i.e. Samuel
Cecil and James Boydston)?

I have seen on at least one archive family group sheet the or Bileston or

Paul : I am interested in any data on Priscilla Boyleston/Boydstun. The
Priscilla you mention d/o of Thomas Boydstun and Elizabeth Newport with
Thomas being the son of James Boydstun and Mary Pruitt/Prewitt, then James
being son of David and Mahala Snow or Sarah Pruitt......Mary Prewitt is d/o of
Samuel Pruitt & Elizabeth Hawker.......did I get this correct? I would be
interested in the other data you reference.
I have an LDS Archive Family Group Sheet for Benjamin Sollers Cecil and it
gives Priscilla Boyleston OR Bileston, OR Baylor. Has anyone looked around at
these other surnames as possibilities.
