Subject: Re: Eliz. dau. of Phillip?
Randy, I just posted that cuz I thought it was interesting. I get a
headache every time I try to figure it out. I do not have a clue. I
think the person who said the son of Thomas Witten, Jr. was the speaker
makes the most sense. Who she was the daughter of I don't know.
Possibly Mr. Ball meant this William because one of the people he sent
the letter to was Alta Cecil Koch and this would be her line. In the
letter he said you are all descendants of Phillip. So it would have to
be her brother William.
This may confuse you if you are not familiar with Alta Cecil Koch's
book where she corrects some errors Mr. Ball made. That is why I was so
disgusted with E.G.Jourdan's new book she did not include Alta Cecil
Koch's book nor did she refute it so I do not know what to believe.
Anywhere here it is. Do we really want to open this can of worms
again? :-D
P.S. The stuff on Benj. and Ann Fisher is some stuff I sent to Paul
because we have researched a Benj and Onner in Ohio and believe they are
one and the same as Benj. and Ann Fisher so just ignore that part.
Descendants of William Cecil

Notes for Benjamin Cecil:
THE CECIL FAMILY OF MARYLAND on page 47 Benjamin
who married Ann Fisher is discussed. Mr. Ball quotes a land record.
Deed Book K, Folio 57 Mont. co. shows that John Cecil and Benjamin Cecil
bought a tract of land
from Joshua Cecil in Nov. 1801. Deed Book O Fol. 50, Mont. co. shows
the following: "19 Dec.
1807 John Cecil and Benjamin Cecil, of Mont. co. sell to Henry poole ,
etc Right of dower by Mary,
wife of John and Annie wife of Benjamin.
Except when I sent for this record it did not say Annie by any means it
said Onner
Cecil. Could Benjamin and Onner be Benj. and Ann Fisher?
Mr. Ball goes on to say Deed bk T Fol. 112 Mont. Co.
Indenture 27 July 1816 Benj. Cecil of Mont. Co. sells to Martha Riley
for $2,000, parcel of land
called WildCatt Springs, Chance Widows Purchase and Resurvey on wilcatt
Springs that devised to
the orphans of Benjamin Cecil by William Cecil, his father the aforesaid
lands lying adjacent to each
other and part of a tractcalled Chance that was in the year 1807
conveyed by William Ball to Henry
Poole cont. 42 acres.(note-this was the last record found of Benjamin
Cecil or his heirs-WVB)
Could Wm. have left orphans which Benj. was responsible for?

This is some e-mail from a Danford researcher-
Hi again,
I started this genealogy thing after my dad died; but wish I had started
sooner. He was always so interested in it. Luckily I wrote down his
stories and stashed them away. This was the Danforth lineage.
After two years on the Danforths I started on my husband's. His mother
was a Cecil and she had quite a bit of info from a Mr. Ball.
Anyway her line was 1. William Cecil - Maryland; 2. John
Cecil(1689-1759) m. Elizabeth Sollers in 1718, lived in Prince George's
Co., Md.; 3. Samuel Cecil(1721-1786) m. Rebecca White in 1744-5, lived
in Md and Pulaski Co. Virginia; 4. Zachariah Cecil(1757-1823) m. Nancy
Ingram in 1783, lived in Pulaski Co., Va. and Washington Twp., Shelby
Co., Ohio; 5. Aaron Ingram Cecil(1792-1860) m. Ann Butler Springer in
1815, lived in Shelby Co.,Ohio and moved to Peery Twp.,Delaware
Co.,Muncie, Indiana; 6. Samuel Cecil(1824-1916) m. Rhoda Truitt in 1847,
lived in Delaware Co.,Muncie, Indiana; 7. Dr. Aaron Albert
Cecil(1854-1929) m. Emma Jane Roach-2nd. wife-in 1882, lived in Delaware
Co., Muncie, Indiana; 8. Ralph Vincent Sr.(1884-1960) m. Minnie Lou
Benadum in 1906, lived in Madison Co., Anderson, Indiana; Martha Jane
Cecil(1907-1993) m. Joseph Everett Wise in 1927, lived in Madison Co.
Anderson, Indiana; Kenneth Everett Wise(1936- ) m. Constance F. Danforth
in 1957, live in Madison Co. Anderson, Indiana.
We have two children and one grandchild. Martha Jane had a younger
brother, Ralph V. Cecil Jr.(1911-1987 m. Kathryn French in . They had a
daughter, Kara Cecil(1942- )m. Lee Campbell in 1962, live in Delaware
Co.,Muncie, Indiana.
A law student typed the most of info that I have and I think some of the
dates are wrong. I have not verified them yet, but plan to in the
future. If you're not in to it, you're no the real careful. I make them
and I really try to be careful.
Let me know if I can help you. Guess we're too far away to have
lunch.:^)
Connie
I began my Danforth research here in Madison Co. Beginning with my
father. I contacted some cousins and their response was better than
anticipated; but I can only go back to my GG Grandfather. Courthouse
records were burned twice and Deed Books were the only things saved. I
pulled every Deed Bk looking for the Danforth name and came up with my
GG grandfather. No one in the family knew about him until then.
I also found the John Danforth married to Priscilla Ann Price. Her
mother was Elizabeth(Cecil)Price born 29 Mar 1789 Prince George's
County, now Fredrick Co., Maryland. She would have been the same age as
the Margaret Cecil living with them in the 1870 Census. I have been told
that Census takers were not very reliable back then. Maybe she was her
mother and the name was put down wrong.

I don't know if this is right this is what I show for the kids of Henry
and Rebecca Claypool Cecil. Matilda is Linny McGuire.
Descendants of Henry W. Cecil
Generation No. 1
1. Henry W.5 Cecil (James4, Samuel W.3, John2, William1) was born
Bet. 1797 - 1798 in Tazewell co. Virginia, and died Bet. 1862 - 1863.
He married Rebecca Claypool 02 August, 1821 in Tazewell co. Virginia.
Children of Henry Cecil and Rebecca Claypool are:
2 i. Jeremiah6 Cecil, born Bet. 1826 - 1828 in Tazewell co. Virginia.
He married Frances Greene 14 April, 1849 in Tazewell co. Virginia.
3 ii. Granville G. Cecil, born Abt. 1829 in Tazewell co. Virginia; died
Abt. 1865 in Amelia co. Virginia. He married Matilda McGuire 16 August,
1849 in Tazewell co. Virginia.

This is what I have on Samuel and it is really iffy w/ so many of Benj.
Sol. unknown. I had thought his son Joseph had marriedSarilla Adams but
it now appears that might be the son of Solomon. Who Solomon is I do
not know. Since that name was often used inter-changeably w/ Benj. Sol.
in that line. Benj. Sollers Sr. had a son James who we have 1 tentative
dau. for and census shows he had at least 7 children and at least 3 0f
them males. Another son of Benj. Sol, William I just have once on
census in Tenn. and it looks like he has 3 males by 1830. Even some of
the documented stuff may be incorrect since they all used the same names
over and over.
Descendants of Samuel Cecil
Generation No. 1
1. Samuel5 Cecil (Benjamin Sollers4, Samuel W.3, John2, William1) was
born 15 May, 1786 in Montgomery co. Virginia, and died in Wayne Co.
Kentucky. He married (1) Catherine Peavyhouse 19 December, 1804 in
Wayne Co Kentucky. He married (2) Jane Chrisman 21 August, 1806 in
Wayne Co Kentucky, daughter of Isaac Chrisman and Judy.
Child of Samuel Cecil and Catherine Peavyhouse is:
2 i. James Timothy6 Cecil, born 05 December, 1805 in Wayne Co Kentucky;
died 14 September, 1871 in Scott Co. Tennessee. He married Pharaba Reed
Abt. 1824 in Scott Co. Tennessee.

Don't know if this suggests anything but:
>From Frederick County Deed, liber E, folio 661
"Samuel Cecil, of Frederick Co., hath leased from Mathias Bordley, of Charles
Town, Cecil County, a tract of land called "The Principal..."
This lease dates to 1754. One might wonder if Samuel had lived in Cecil
County at sometime after his marriage to Rebecca (about 1747 or so) and knew
this gentleman. Ah well, enough speculation!! Penny

Someone (lost post) asked about Elizabeth Sollars recently. I don't know why,
but she's a favorite ancestress of mine. Anyway, we know that she was the
daughter of John Sollers (Sollars) and Ann Sabrett. She was born sometime
prior to 1699 (the year her father died), probably about 1697 or so. She may
have lived with her mother and new husband William Darrumple, or with her
brother Robert and his wife, Mary Selby (whose stepfather was Judge Joshua
Cecil...interesting, eh?).
Elizabeth, daughter of a gentleman, married John Cecil, formerly indentured to
the Duvals as we all know, in 1718. They had six sons of whom we have record:
Zephaniah, Samuel W., Sabret, Thomas, William and James.
John Cecil died prior to February 1759, when an account of his inventory was
filed by Elizabeth. This inventory names sons Thomas, James, Sabret and
Samuel. In his will, John left his land and property to his wife; and after
her death or remarriage the land was to go to oldest son, Zephaniah.
We know that Zephaniah sold his father's land in 1769 to his brother Thomas.
This strongly suggests that Elizabeth died sometime prior to 1769. About
1767, her son Samuel, his family and related Wittens left Maryland for
Virginia. This makes me suspect that Elizabeth died sometime near to
1766...no proof, but seems a logical assumption. As far as I know, no one
knows where William, sons John and Phillip, and their wives are buried. All
died in an area of Maryland which is now heavily built...so probably all
traces long gone.
Though I am a doubting Thomas, I hope that there is an afterlife so that I can
meet all of these folks! I have lots o questions for them!! Penny

Probably or possibly the area was part of Prince George's County until such

Do you suppose they had removed to Elkton area rather than eat oysters during
the late 1600's???

Cecil County was not, that I know, a part of PGC. It was apparently named
after Lord Cecilius Calvert, who was named for his godfather, Lord Robert

Number 3, Samuel CALDWELL and Ann Eliza CECIL, are the subjects of the series
of e-mails that went through Randy's Witten List in April. They had a large
family (12 or 13 kids), and went from Lee Co., VA, to Greene Co., Missouri, in
1840 where most of the family is buried in a now abandoned family cemetery.
Also in this cemetery is Rebecca CECIL (1780-1862), believed to be Ann Eliza's
mother. Rebecca (b. Octoberr 21, 1780, Tazewell Co., VA) is believed to be
the daughter of William CECIL and Nancy Ann WITTEN.
This 1821 marriage record now presents the question: Who is the W. C.
CALDWELL (b. April 22, 1818, d. Nov. 23, 1872) buried with the rest of the
family in the Greene Co., MO, cemetery? It was considered "possible" that he
was Samuel and Ann Eliza's first child even though Ann Eliza would have been
only 14 at the time. The next child attributed to Samuel and Ann Eliza was
born in 1824. --Wilene Smith in Wichita, KS
On 16 Aug 1998 [CECIL-D Digest V98 #25], Melissa Thompson Alexander
<mada(a)cmc.net>, in reply to the query about "Unknown Taz. Co Cecil
Marriages," mentioned the following.
> I don't have any of them, though note that Sarah Cecil,
> b c 1785 d of Nancy A. Witten and William Cecil,
> married a James Caldwell, they emigrated to TN.
The statement that James Caldwell and Sarah "Sally" (Cecil) Caldwell
emigrated to TN is an old one, and many subsequent genealogists have
assumed that it is true. Alas, parties left behind by emigrating
settlers sometimes erred when asked the destinations of their former
neighbors. Being a descendant of James Caldwell and Sarah Cecil, I've
tracked down specifics about where they lived. For more than a decade
they lived close to the border between Virginia and Tennessee (but
actually in Scott County, VA), and the claim that they emigrated to
Tennessee probably originated from that circumstance.

1791. James Caldwell was born circa 1791, presumably in southwestern
Virginia. This age of birth is inferred from his age of 69 given in the
1860 U.S. Census of Lawrence County, Missouri (Greene Township, Phelps
Post Office, page 110, dwelling 752, family 715).
[James Caldwell may have been a son of Thomas Caldwell, who had been
appointed as a Washington Co., VA commissioner on April 30, 1777
(Summers, 1929, Vol. 2, p. 961). Thomas Caldwell was authorized by the
Washington County Court on April 21, 1784 "to keep Ordinary at his own
House" (Summers, 1929, p. 1175).] Washington County, VA was partitioned
in to form Russell County, VA; consequently, early records of Russell
County residents often appear in Washington County.
1793-1795. The 1850 Census of Scott County VA, in which Sarah "Sally"
(Cecil) Caldwell was listed as being 57 years old, implies that she was
born in 1793. Some other sources indicate that she was born in 1795.
March 20, 1817. James Caldwell married Sarah "Sally" Cecil, daughter of
William Cecil (1749-1836Dec11) and Ann "Nancy" Witten (1755-1843Sep06)
of Tazewell County, Virginia March 20, 1817 (Schreiner-Yantis, 1973, p.
205). The wedding took place in Tazewell County, Virginia, and was
performed by Isaac Quinn (Schreiner-Yantis, 1973, p. 205), a Methodist
minister. James and Sally were the parents of Rebecca A. (Caldwell)
Price, wife of George T. Price. Also, Sally Cecil was the sister of
Elizabeth (Cecil) Price, George T. Price's mother. Walter V. Ball's
history of the Cecil family lists Sally Cecil's name as "Sarah Cecil"
(1963, p. 16).
December 4, 1820. The household of James Caldwell and Sarah "Sally"
(Cecil) Caldwell is listed on page 6 of the 1820 census of Russell
County, VA. James Caldwell appears in various Russell County property
records; most of his land seemed to be on Copper Creek, in the vicinity
of Dickensonville.
1821. Brothers-in-law William Price (1788-1837) (33 years), husband of
Elizabeth Cecil, and James Caldwell (approximately 30 years), husband of
Sarah "Sally" Cecil, were elected as the two Russell County members of
the Virginia House of Delegates (The Russell County Heritage Book
Committee, 1985, Vol. 1, p. 74).
1823Apr14. Rebecca A. Caldwell (1823Apr14-1906Mar30), daughter of James
Caldwell (ca 1791- >1860) and Sarah "Sally" Cecil (ca 1795- >1860), was
born April 14, 1823 in Virginia -- probably in Russell County.
1830. The 1830 census of Russell County, VA was burned and is
unavailable. Sometime between 1823 and 1840, James Caldwell and Sarah
"Sally" (Cecil) Caldwell moved southwestward from Russell County, VA to
Scott County, VA.
1836. Crabtree Price, Linnie (Cecil) Price [a sister of Elizabeth
(Cecil) Price and Sarah "Sally" (Cecil) Caldwell], and some of their
children (including future U.S. Judge and U.S. Treasurer William Cecil
Price and John H. Price) moved to Greene County, Missouri and
homesteaded on the James River, 8 miles east of Springfield, Missouri.
The land on which they settled is located in Taylor township, Greene
County (section 13, township 29, range 20). (See Holcombe, 1883, pp.
130-133, 702; also see Hubble, 1914, p. 48.) This location is at 37
degrees, 12 minutes, 30 seconds north latitude and 93 degrees, 4
minutes, 38 seconds west longitude.
1836Nov. William Crabtree Price, husband of Elizabeth "Betsey" Cecil,
ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress as a Calhoun-sympathizing
nullificationist against George W. Hopkins of Lebanon, Russell County,
VA.
1836Dec11. William Cecil died in Tazewell County, Virginia at age 87 on
December 11, 1836 (Schreiner-Yantis, 1973, p. 208).
1837Sep20. On September 20, 1837, William Crabtree Price (48.85 years)
died in a part of Russell County, Virginia that had originally been part
of Washington County (see Holcombe, 1883, p. 883). He was a son of
Richard Price (d. 1803) and Priscilla (Crabtree) Price (d. Sept-Oct
1826), hence a brother of Crabtree Price. He was the husband of
Elizabeth "Betsey" Cecil, who died November 20, 1841. The youngest
child of William Crabtree Price and Elizabeth (Cecil) Price was George
T. Price, from whom we are descended. At the time his father died,
George was approximately 12 years old.
William Crabtree Price and Elizabeth "Betsey" (Cecil) Price had
evidently intended to move to southwestern Missouri, like Crabtree Price
and Linnie (Cecil) Price. William's will stated that, "Balance of
estate constitutes a fund to remove my family to the state of Missouri"
(Russell County, VA Will Book No. 5, page 105). The family did move to
Missouri. Elizabeth (Cecil) Price, William C. Price, John C. Price,
Henry C. Price, and George T. Price all homesteaded in Lawrence County,
Missouri.
William C. [Crabtree] Price[homesteaded 160 acres in section 25,
township 29, range 27, Lawrence County, Missouri (Abstracts of United
States Land Sales in Missouri 1818-1903, Vol. 6, page 76).
John C. [Crabtree] Price [homesteaded 240 acres in section 32, township
29, range 27, Lawrence County, Missouri (Abstracts of United States Land
Sales in Missouri 1818-1903, Vol. 6, page 76).
Samuel C. Price [Samuel Price's arrival in Lawrence County, Missouri
was recorded in 1837. See Lawrence County Missouri History (Miller et
al, 1974, page 6). But he did not homestead there. Samuel emigrated to
Lamar County, Texas on September 27, 1839.]
Richard B. Price did not homestead in Lawrence County, MO. He may be
the Richard Price who lived in Neosho, Newton County, Missouri at the
time of the 1850 census (page 327).
Priscilla Ann Price [born October 5, 1820; married John Wood Danforth
on December 19, 1838 -- probably in Springfield, Missouri; John &
Priscilla were founding members of Forsyth, Taney County, Missouri; and
they donated the land on which the Taney County court house was built
(See Holcombe, 1883, p. 883. Also see Ozar'kin', Spring 1980, Vol. 2,
No. 1, page 50.)]
Henry C. Price [homesteaded 160 acres in section 30, township 29, range
26, Lawrence County, Missouri (Abstracts of United States Land Sales in
Missouri 1818-1903, Vol. 6, page 293).]
George T. Price, despite his young age, managed to gain homestead title
to 80 acres in section 5, township 28, range 27, Lawrence County,
Missouri (Abstracts of United States Land Sales in Missouri 1818-1903,
Vol. 7, page 1). This land was adjacent to land owned by his mother and
siblings.
1840. The household of James Caldwell and Sarah "Sally" (Cecil)
Caldwell is listed on page 5 of the 1840 census of Scott County,
Virginia.
1841Nov20. Elizabeth "Betsey" (Cecil) Price died November 20, 1841 and
was buried in Lawrence County, Missouri.
1843Sep06. Ann "Nancy" (Witten) Cecil, widow of William Cecil (d.
1836), died on September 6, 1843 in Tazewell County, VA.
1845Feb04. George T. Price returned to Virginia as a young man,
marrying his first cousin Rebecca A. Caldwell on February 4, 1845 in
Scott County, Virginia, where the Caldwells resided.
1850. The U.S. Census in 1850 listed names of persons in a household.
At the time of the census, George T. Price, Rebecca (Caldwell) Price,
and their three oldest children were living in Western Township, Scott
County, Virginia with Rebecca's parents [James Caldwell and Sally
(Cecil) Caldwell] and older brother [William C. Caldwell].
1857. James Caldwell, Sarah "Sally" (Cecil) Caldwell, George T. Price,
Rebecca (Caldwell) Price, and the Prices' children moved from Scott
County, Virginia, to Lawrence County, Missouri, where several of
George's siblings lived and where George still owned land. [This move
is mentioned in a biographical sketch of George and Henry Price that
appeared in The Kansas City Star (Sunday edition, June 16, 1907, page
10A). The biographical sketch is inaccurate in several respects, but
the date of the westward move is corroborated by other records.]
1860. James Caldwell and Sarah "Sally" (Cecil) Caldwell were residing
with George T. Price and Rebecca (Caldwell) Price at the time of the
1860 census of Lawrence County, MO. This is the last record I have of
James Caldwell and Sarah "Sally" (Cecil) Caldwell.
1866. Unlike most of his Lawrence County, MO siblings, George T. Price
had sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War. In 1866, facing
postwar animosities of neighbors, he sold his Lawrence County land and
moved to Udall, Bayou Township, Ozark County, Missouri. There, George
T. Price and Rebecca (Caldwell) Price erected the "Price Mansion" on
North Fork River (North Fork of the White River), 3 miles downstream
from the mouth of Lick Creek, Ozark County, Missouri (approximate
coordinates: 92 degrees, 16 minutes, 43 seconds West Longitude, 36
degrees, 31 minutes, 51 seconds North Latitude).
1906Mar30. Rebecca A. (Caldwell) Price died March 30, 1906 in Udall,
Ozark County, Missouri. Her grave, originally located on a part of the
Price plantation that was flooded by the construction of Norfork Lake,
was moved subsequently to the Udall Cemetery.
1910Mar25. George T. Price died at his home in Udall, Bayou township,
Ozark County, Missouri on March 25, 1910 (Missouri State Board of
Health, Certificate of Death, File No. 10576). His grave, originally
located on a part of the Price plantation that was flooded by the
construction of Norfork Lake, was moved subsequently to the Udall
Cemetery.

Elkton in Cecil Co.! I think this is
wishful thinking, but Our part of the
Cecils were fairly situated in Prince
Georges's Co.
>>
Hi Randy; Yup...I know that they were situated in PGC. But I thought it
kinda interesting that these old gals in the 1940s came up with Elkton in
Cecil County. Maybe they knew something we didn't?? It is possible that
Samuel Cecil (who wandered around a bit) went to live there after his marriage
to Rebecca White. He may have gone to work for somebody there?? Just
speculation. Til later, Penny
