The British pronunciation of CECIL sounds like Sessell or Cissell. The only
early family I have found anywhere is the Cyssell family of Wales, from
whence the Cecil's of Lord Burghley descend. I presume that all the rest
descend from this same Cyssell family, whether from England, Wales, Europe
or Barbados. The linkages are the tricky part. Together we may be able to
share research and find out some of these questions.

23 generations of Cissells. I don't seem to agree with other Cecil/Cissell
researchers, so I'm asking for suggestions. (I have used "Cecil" to mean Cecil
or Cissell.)
Peter Cissell married Eleanor Cissell (below). I am related through both.

It is difficult to make any blanket assumptions simply based on the
spelling of the name alone--the overwhelming majority of people were
illiterate before this century, so spelling was very inconsistent. I do
believe there were attempts to designate the spellings of many pairs of
similar-sounding English surnames as either Catholic or Protestant, when
such things were of paramount political importance, but the high incidence
of illiteracy made their use inconsistent.
FWIW, some of my late father's first cousins (from Marion Co., KY) use the
CECIL spelling, and some use CISSELL (with some variation occurring within
individual nuclear families!). However, my father's family *always*
pronounces the surname with a short i (like Cissell), even when it is
spelled Cecil.

I have two documents, each showing 5 generations of Cissell/Cecil men with
both spellings, some used Cissell, some used Cecil. Some were Catholic, some
protestant.

Does anyone have the name of the Cissell who married this Ann Payne?

I think it could be a valuable start to consider IF Cecil is the same family
as Cissell, or did Cecils (or some branch or branches of the Cecils) start
using Cissell at some point.
For research purposes, I generally look for both and consider them the same
because they seem interchangeable.
I do think, however, that the original Cecils who came from Europe (where?)
were Cecils, not Cissells.
