This is in reply to the following messages regarding the family of George W. CARLOCK which
appeared on the CEARLOCK list yesterday. First, I would like to point out that there were
at least nine different George W. CARLOCKs, as well as at least four George CARLOCKs with
no middle name listed in the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion
Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. Note that both my direct ancestor George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (ca.
1779 - ca. 1862) and George Washington CARLOCK (1812 - 1862) have descendants who spelled
their name "CEARLOCK".
1. George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (ca. 1779 - ca. 1862) is not listed in the above-mentioned
book, and I cannot yet positively identify his lineage from the original GERLACH/CARLOCK
immigrants. This George is most likely somehow descended from David GERLACH/CARLOCK who
is listed on page 436 of the above-mentioned book, possibly through his son Frederick who
migrated to Mecklenburg Co., NC. Further discussion about the lines of both this George
and George Washington CARLOCK (1812 - 1862) can be found in the archives of the CEARLOCK
list through the following URL:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/cearlock.html.
This George was b. ca. 1779, NC; m. Rachel LANDERS, 11 Oct 1805, Warren Co., KY; and d.
ca. 1862, possibly Montgomery Co., IL. (Note that Rachel's family came from
Mecklenburg Co., NC, and that Mecklenburg Co. court records mention a Henry KERLOCK in
connection with the orphans of her grandfather Christopher LANDIS.) This George migrated
to Fayette Co., IL, as also did William CARLOCK (b. 1814, Warren Co., KY), listed on page
440 of "History of the Carlock Family", brother to George Washington CARLOCK
(1812 - 1862), listed below.
2. George W. CARLOCK (1812 - 1862) can be found listed on page 438 of the book
"History of the CARLOCK Family", and pictured on page 439 of that same book.
The book says that this George (s/o John, Lemuel, Hanchrist, David) was b. 25 Apr 1812,
Allen Co., KY; m#1. Kitty Virginia READ; m#2. Elvira SMITH; and d. 17 Feb 1862, Warren
Co., KY. Some descendants of this George went to Texas and Oklahoma.
3. George W. CARLOCK (s/o Joseph Taylor, Joseph, Lemuel, Hanchrist, David) can be found
on page 440 of the above-mentioned book. The book does not list birth and death dates for
this individual, but does say that he m. Mary JONES and "served with northwestern Ga.
troops with rank of Capt. in Confederate Army". His father was born in 1802, and
lived in Walker Co., Ga.
4. George William CARLOCK (b. 1845), (s/o Henry, George Osborn, Abraham, Hanchrist,
David) can be found on page 463 of "History of the Carlock Family. According to the
book, he was b. 26 Jun 1845; m. Rachel N. CANADY; and resided in Gentry, MO.
5. George W. CARLOCK (1848 - 1858) (s/o Abraham Depew, Lewis, John, John, Johann
Christian) can be found on page 419 of "History of the Carlock Family".
According to the book, he was b. 12 Dec 1848, and d. 7 Jan 1858.
6. George W. CARLOCK (1854 - 1879) (s/o Winton, Reuben, Abraham, Hanchrist, David) can be
found on page 451 of the above-mentioned book. According to the book, he was b. 18 Jun
1854; m. Mary Elizabeth WEST; and d. 7 Jul 1879 without issue.
7. George W. CARLOCK (b. 1857) (s/o William Jackson, Abraham, Hanchrist, David) can be
found on page 507 of the book. He was reportedly born 27 Feb, 1857, was a
"bachelor", and resided in Bath, IL.
8. George William CARLOCK (b. 1862), (s/o Madison P., Abraham Willard, Abraham,
Hanchrist, David) can be found on pages 472 and 475 of "History of the Carlock
Family". According to the book, this George was b. 4 Jun 1862, Logan Co., IL; m.
Ellen May MARTIN, 28 Feb 1884; and was a brother to Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, author of the
book.
9. George William CARLOCK (b. 1926), (s/o George Daniel, Madison Henry, George William,
Henry, George Osborn, Abraham, Hanchrist, David) can be found on page 470 of the book.
The book lists his birthdate as 28 Dec 1926.
