Seeking information regarding ancestry of George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca.
1779, NC; m. Rachel LANDERS, 11 Oct 1805, Warren Co., KY; living with son
Henry in Montgomery Co., IL, 1860; d. ca. 1862.
A likely candidate for George's father is the George CARLOCK, b. 1740,
Shenandoah Valley, VA; d. Mecklenburg Co., NC, 1815, listed on page 615 of
the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929.
The LANDERS in-laws of George who was born in 1779 are known to have been in
Mecklenburg Co., NC. Furthermore, the George b. in 1740 appears in various
records as "CAERLOCK", "CERLOCK", "CERLOUGH", and
"KERLOCK", which is
consistent with the pronunciation of the name "CEARLOCK". It also seems
unlikely that the eldest child of the George b. in 1740 was b. in 1785 as the
book states.
The ancestry of the George b. in 1740 can be found on pages 436 and 437 of
the same book. The book lists his father as Frederick CARLOCK, b. 1720,
Holland; in Augusta Co., VA, 1747 - 1753; emigrated to Mecklenburg Co., NC.
Frederick's father is listed as David CARLOCK/GERLACH, b. ca. 1679,
Palatinate, Germany; migrated to Holland after 1685; in Shenandoah Valley,
VA, by 1741; d. ca. 1763, Augusta Co., VA. I have also found that some of
David's son Hanchrist's descendants have used the spelling "CEARLOCK".
