I did some research at the San Antonio Genealogical & Historical Library
this past afternoon and found the following information regarding
Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, CARLOCKs who served in the Revolutionary
War:
Source: "Roster of Soldiers From North Carolina in the American Revolution"
(Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1967).
Pg. 306 -- Dec. 1, 1788, George CARLOCK deeded 182 acres for 24 months of
service “Within the limits of the lands allotted the officers and soldiers
of the Continental Line, by Law, 1783, Oct. 14.”
Pg. 331 -- Militia, Frederick CORLOCK, No. 4881, Salisbury District,
Mecklenburg Co., NC.
Pg. 332 -- Militia, David CORLOCK, No. 2576, Salisbury District, Mecklenburg
Co., NC.
This David would be David CARLOCK, b. ca. 1739 (s/o Frederick
CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH), direct
ancestor of the Illinois branch of the CEARLOCK/CURLOCK family.
It is not clear to me which of the two George CARLOCKs and Frederick
CARLOCKs of Mecklenburg Co., NC, are referenced above. DAR records, the
"History of the Carlock Family" book, etc., have given credit to the elder
George CARLOCK, brother to the above-mentioned David CARLOCK. Additional
research is needed to determine if credit has been given to the correct
individual.
Incomplete, and in some cases inaccurate records for the elder Frederick
CARLOCK/CARELOCK (b. 1720) and his descendants can be found on the following
pages in the book “History of the Carlock Family,” by Marion Pomeroy
CARLOCK, 1929: 31 – 33, 50, 436 – 437, 615 – 630. The younger Frederick
CARLOCK, b. 1750 (probable s/o Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David
GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH), the younger George CARLOCK
(probable grandson of Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK,
Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH), who married Millison, and the above-mentiond
David CARLOCK (b ca. 1739) were not even mentioned in Marion Pomeroy
CARLOCK’s book.
Two Fredericks (KERLOCK) and two Georges (KERLOCK and CERLAUGH) appear on
the 1790 census for Mecklenburg Co., NC. The alternative spellings of the
CARLOCK surname used by the elder Frederick CARLOCK and his descendants have
contributed to confusion in sorting out the various members of this branch
of the family.
Please let me know if you have any evidence regarding which George CARLOCK
and Frederick CARLOCK are referenced above for their militia service during
the Revolutionary War.
