Sue,
I'm your second cousin Keith and my parents pronounce it like Carelock, and
I do to. I get a lot of the Searlock pronunciations too. A lot of people
want to put an l after the C and say Clearlock.
I would be interested to see a summary of your responses!
Thanks,
Keith

Subject: Pronunciation of "CEARLOCK"
It would also be interesting to know how various CEARLOCKs pronounce
their
surname. My close relatives pronounce their surname like "CARELOCK", but
I
am told that my grandfather pronounced the name more like
"KERLOCK". My
cousin Diana recently told me that before her brother Mike's death in 1994
he
had stopped trying to fight everyone pronouncing our surname like
"SEARLOCK"
and had started pronouncing the name that way himself. Of course, we
know
from page 615 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion
Pomeroy
CARLOCK, 1929, that George CARLOCK (s/o Frederick, David)
"appears in
various
records as Caerlock, Cerlock, Cerlough, and Kerlock." I would
especially
like to know how those CEARLOCKs who can trace their ancestry back to
Lemuel
CARLOCK (s/o Hanchrist, David) who appears on page 437 of the same
book
pronounce their surname.
