This is a follow-up to my previous postings titled “CARLOCK and CEARLOCK
Families of Allen Co. and Warren Co., KY.”
The John D. CEARLOCK listed on the 1820 census for Simpson Co., KY, appears
to be John D. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (s/o David CARLOCK/CARELOCK, Frederick
CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH.) He
was born ca. 1795 and married Polly GIBSON, d/o Jacob GIBSON, Jan. 6, 1814,
in Warren Co., KY. This John CARLOCK/CEARLOCK was not mentioned in the book
“History of the Carlock Family,” by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. According
to Katheryn HADDAD’s (Haddad1940(a)yahoo.com) detailed Apr. 27, 2003, posting
to the RootsWeb CARLOCK mailing list titled “Family of David Carlock of
Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY,” archived at the following site,
this John migrated to Missouri:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CARLOCK/2003-04/1051444699
Additional information about this John can be found in Mary June’s (
BoxerB(a)aol.com) Feb. 23, 2003, posting to the RootsWeb Warren Co., KY,
mailing list, titled “Re: CARLOCK, CURLOCK, KERLOCK, and CEARLOCK Families
of Warren Co., KY,” archived at the following site:

As mentioned in my previous postings, this John CARLOCK/CEARLOCK’s brother
George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (b. ca. 1779, NC) was the progenitor of the
CEARLOCK family of Fayette Co., IL, and the CURLOCK family of Jefferson Co.,
IL. I do not yet have any information about this John CARLOCK/CEARLOCK’s
descendants, although it appears from the 1820 census that he probably had a
daughter under age 10 in 1820.
There were apparently two John CARLOCKs living in Simpson Co., KY, around
1820. Reportedly both John CARLOCKs appear on Simpson Co., KY, tax
lists. According
to the following site, Simpson Co., KY, was formed in 1819 from Allen Co.,
Logan Co., and Warren Co.:
http://www.usgwarchives.org/ky/simpson/toc.html
The second John CARLOCK (s/o Lemuel CARLOCK, Hanchrist CARLOCK, David
GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH) was born Oct. 1, 1772,
southwestern VA; married Elizabeth; and died Feb. 4, 1833, Simpson Co., KY.
He is mentioned on pages 33, 396, and 437 of the book “History of the
Carlock Family,” by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. As mentioned in my
previous postings, his son George Washington CARLOCK/CARELOCK (1812 – 1862)
of Allen Co. and Warren Co., KY, was the father of Luther C.
CARLOCK/CARELOCK (b. 1841) who was the progenitor of the CEARLOCK family of
Stephens Co., OK, and the CURLOCK family of Beckham Co., OK. John’s wife
Elizabeth died ca. 1845, probably Montgomery Co., IL.
A list of census headings can be found at the following site:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~auntjean/dent/archive/cens_key.htm
The 1820 census (sheet 16) lists the following for John D. CEARLOCK’s
household in Simpson Co., KY:

Free white males 10 - 16 -- 0
Free white males 16 - 18 -- 0
Free white males 16 - 26 -- 0
Free white males 26 - 45 -- 1

Free white females 10 - 16 -- 0
Free white females 16 - 26 -- 1
Free white females 26 - 45 -- 0

Note that John D. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (b. ca. 1795) would have been about 25
years old in 1820, whereas John CARLOCK (b. Oct. 1772) would have been 47 to
48 years old in 1820. The census lists a male aged 26 to 45 as the head of
household.
