I'm with you! These spelling changes really confuse matters. The 1880 Federal Census
online has only muddied the waters further. I had always seen my great-grandmother's
maiden name spelled CAYWOOD. However the 1880 census lists her mother as Matilda KAYWOOD
(living with a daughter); one of Matilda's sons in listed as Leander CAWOOD and
another son is listed as O. J. CAYWOOD. Then, there is an "Elx" KAYWOOD born
the same year as Matilda's son "Alex" living very near to Matilda and three
of her daughters. I'll have to work on that one a little more. Either individuals
intentionally changed spellings, the 1880 census takers were not as careful with spellings
as they might have been or the old handwritten census pages were difficult to read when
transcribed.
I have a copy of information taken from the Montgomery County, Iowa newspaper dated 13 Feb
1913, which reads: "Mr. and Mrs. M. Caywood of Maitland, Missouri visited part of
this week with Mr. Caywood's aunt, Mrs. Hunt and attended the funeral of John Caywood
at Reno." Mrs. Hunt is my great-grandmother, John was probably her brother and I
assume Reno was a community in or near Montgomery County, IA. This John may have been
another nephew of Mrs. Hunt or one of her brothers.
I'll copy what I have in my FTM and send it to you directly.
