Hi Doreen,
Ella Caywood and I went to Comanche, TX on Jan 30, 2002 looking for Matilda's grave.
I showed she died in Nov, 1884 and was buried in Copperas Creek Cemetery in Comanche, TX.
We had trouble finding this cemetery and talked to a Mrs. Waring at the Comanche Public
Library (she has inventoried all the cemeteries in Comanche Cy, Tx and published a 4
volume set). If Matilda is buried there there's no monument or tombstone on the grave
in any cemetery in Comanche Cy, Tx.
I also show that William Isaac (we think that was his middle name) died in 1866 in
Fredericksburg, Gillespie Cy, TX. I contacted the Fredericksburg Genealogy Society and a
very kind gentleman did some research for me but could not find any records of his death
there. The story is that he died in a knife fight over a dog. And the newspaper in
Fredericksburg did not start until 1888. And no record of his being buried there either.
Ella says she heard the story once that he died in Kansas or Missouri or somewhere around
there in 1866 but we really have no idea.
You're right about the census place of birth for him. The 1850 Robertson Cy, TX
census shows he was born in NY -but the 1860 Madison Cy, TX census shows NJ. I did find a
William Caywood in the 1840 Census for Chemung, Chemung Cy, NY who was 20-30 years old.
It also showed a wife in that same age group. I posted on the Chemung Cy website seeking
info but have heard nothing yet.
If I have this right, you are Minnie Pearl's daughter?
I know Ella has given me some info you had passed along to her. If you find any info
about William or Matilda I would really appreciate you letting us know. BTW, I show
Matilda's name to be Klepper - maybe it is Keppler? I'll look for that and see
what we find.
I also show she was married 3 times: Her first husband was named (last name) Thomas.
Then she married William Caywood and when he died she married (last name)Leonard.
Supposedly she was only married for a short time to Mr. Leonard "because he was mean
to the children".
I would be glad to share any info I have with you. What else are you looking for in this
family?
Take Care
Jerry Caywood
