Yes, John Wesley Caywood is most definitely the son of John Caywood and grandson of Resiah
Caywood of Wantage. John Caywood's estate was recorded in Chemung County; he was born
probably 1782, not 1788, as the ages of his older children make clear. Resiah was
probably born a bit earlier than 1750, and certainly not at Wantage, more likely
Piscataway or New Brunswick. Meanwhile, there is no evidence whatsoever that Resiah was
the son of Benjamin Caywood and Abigail Vail, who were married much too late to be his
parents, and who lived at NYC. Resiah had brothers John (who died at Piscataway in 1774),
Joseph (who died at Wantage in 1780) and David (born c. 1755), who died south of Ithaca
about 1800. I suspect these four brothers were sons of the David Caywood who appears in
the records of the New Brunswick, New Jersey Reformed Dutch Church about 1750. I have
complete families for Resiah and his wife Johanna Allen, for their four known children
Sarah (b. 1775, m. John Woodw!
ard), Charlotte (b. 1777, m. Abraham Longcore/Longcoy), John (b.c.1782, m. 3 times),
Allen (b.c.1785, m. Esther Truesdell), and for David (b.c.1755) and his two wives.
