I am a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. (
suvcw.org) Our local Camp
(chapter) has been working to place Vet's Administration headstones on 64 unmarked
graves in the Civil War veteran's lot in Riverside Cemetery, Kalamazoo, MI. It has
taken us 14 years of research to confirm the identities and service records of the
veterans. There are a total of 125 vet's buried in the lot. We have placed 59
headstones thus far. These men had never had their graves marked.
As of March of this year, the VA now requires a letter from the family of Civil War
veterans in order to process the requests for a headstone. We, the Sons of Union Veterans,
have placed the stones ourselves, covering any expenses (concreate, etc.)
The 1850 Census states that Fernando was 12 years old living with a family with a last
name other than Caywood. Can't make out the last name. He was in Sennett, Cayuga Co.
NY. His enlistment in the service took place in Fulton, NY.
IIt is possible that either his parents died when he was young, or, he was apprenticed out
to a family.
If you would please email me at glgsuvcw(a)aol.com, we can discuss this further.
