John J. Caywood (born abt 1911-d.______)
Joplin friends received a card yesterday from Private John Caywood, from a prison camp
somewhere in Germany. Caywood is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Caywood, 2008 East
Twentieth street, and was first reported missing in action in March, 1943. In August of
last year, his parents received authoritative information that he was slightly wounded and
a prisoner of the Italians at Tunis. About six months ago his mother received a letter
from him, but there was no postmark of identification.
Caywood, who was with an anti-tank unit, saw action in the North African theater. He is
the nephew of Mrs. L. P. Buchanan, and a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Caywood.
The message received yesterday by Mrs. Jack Beeler, 213 North Picher avenue, was on a
regulation post card and stated that Caywood was well. There was no postmark or date on
the card, but the writer stated that "in a week it will be Christmas."
