Hello Everyone,
Recently I found something that could be a
help to the search of my husband's family.
If you connect to this family, or have info that
could help us, please contact me. I have lots
to share with family.
Here is the story, so far -
Christian Friedrich Wilhelm KÜHLER / KOEHLER
was born on 22 Sep 1837 in Prussia. I've found
varying info concerning the exact place. But, all of
them may well be one-in-the same in actuality.
On a form, filed by his widow to request Civil War
pension monies, his birth town is listed as Metz,
Germany. According to the Brandenburg, Prussia,
Emigration Records, Christian was born in either
Melzow or Klinkow, Brandenburg, Prussia.
Christian emigrated in 1863 and fought on the side
of the Union in the war. He then married Christiane
Sophia Dorothea NEUMANN or NIEMANN in Nov 1968
in Wolcottsville, Niagara County, New York, USA.
While I'm not yet sure where all they went in their travels,
they were known to have been in northeast Iowa before
settling in Macon County, Missouri, USA.
Sophia & Christian's marriage record has given
me his parents' names. They were Maria BRAND
and Christian KÜHLER / KÖHLER. This marriage
record also indicates that Maria died before that
ceremony took place.
Recently I found a Maria KUHLER (b 1801) listed
in the 1867 census for Mecklenburg-Schwerin
(Germany) - place Meetzen !!
In this census, her relationship to the family is not stated.
But, the household members are shown as:
Ernest MARTEN - age 33
MacHdalena (?) MARTEN - age 35
Doris MARTEN - age 12
August MARTEN - age 2
"Unbenannt" - age 0 (infant??)
Maria KUHLER - age 66
So, of course, I am wondering -
Could this Maria be ours ?
Maybe she was the mother-in-law in this household ?
There is no mention of her husband also being
deceased at the time of their son's wedding.
Maybe she and her husband had split up ? Maybe
the father was dead and the son did not know? So
many questions!!
