Do you know your great-greatgrandfather's name? That would help me decide the
relationship between our Cawood families. My grandfather was James Frank Cawood
(1880-1965). His parents were Stephen and Virginia Calloway Cawood. Going from there
back in time my ancestors were John and Nancy Turner Cawood, Berry and Nancy Ann Scott
Cawood, Stephen and Esther Berry Cawood and all the way back to Johannes deCawood b. abt
1170 in Cawood, England.
I have no doubt that your great grandfather, James A. Cawood, is credited with founding
the town of Cawood, KY; but it was Berry Cawood who received the post-revolutionary war
land grant for a portion of what is now Cawood, KY. So, he was evidently the first Cawood
to live there and hence the community's name Cawood. I have a copy of a transcription
of Berry's land grant somewhere, but can't put my finger on it at the moment. I
do have a copy of an old newspaper article which appeared in the Harlan paper probably in
the 1930's "Memorial Services for Berry Cawood Prove Both Interesting and
Historical." It isn't a very good copy, but I'll see if I can scan it and
e-mail it to you.
I'm sure there must be a connection between your Cawoods and mine. Mary
