Hi,
I hope someone out there can help me. I am trying to research the family history of the
Cawood family in England. I have found the Gendex listing for Cawood and the first
recorded Cawood is John Cawood of about 1413 AD. Prior to this was Johannes De Cawood,
about 1170 AD. Both of these were born in North Yorkshire, England. There is also a
vilage called Cawood, near Selby in North Yorkshire, established in 838 AD where there is
located Cawood castle, Cawood church and various other buildings and areas all named
Cawood. I have aslo found that the Cawood family began in the Anglo Saxon times at about
1100 AD. The castle was developed as a palace and used by the Archbishops of York and is
the basis for the nursery rhyme of `Humpty Dumpty' after Cardinal Wolsey fell from the
walls and died.
I am looking for information regarding occupations, education, schooling, trades, family
life etc.,
Can anyone be of any help, as I have found using the internet so far pretty useless, and
my local library had only bibliography listing for a John Cawood of 1514 AD who was
printer to the Queen at that time, Lady Jane Grey. He is listed as being one of the De
Cawoods of Cawood and has a coat of arms and was a man of nobility at that time holding
several titles of office.
Apart from this minute piece of information, I have hit a dead end.
I would love to hear from anyone with any relevant information.
Thanking you in anticipation,
Yours sincerely,
Tracie Geelan.
