In 1997, my late grandmother, Eleanor Louise (DARNALL) Wallace, left me with a beautiful
"Darnall Family History". The book includes pictures, stories and letters that
closely match a few online records, and we're fairly confident of its accuracy,
however, one or two critical links are missing.
First, some background for you ......
The book makes clear that we descend from three key Darnall/Darnell ancestors .....
(a) Edward DARNALL & Sarah ROBEY -- our first American Darnalls -- who came from
England to America in the mid-17th century.
(One of my more knowledgeable QUAINTANCE cousins, independently, came to this same
conclusion).
(b) John DARNALL (b. 1736), who married Marianne McDANIEL, abt. 1761, in Maryland
(There is satisfactory documentation to support this connection) and
(c) William C. DARNALL (b. abt 1817 in KY), who married Amelia Ann DUGAN (b. abt 1827 in
KY?) in Hendricks Co., IN on either the 30th or 31st of March, 1842. See
http://www.familyheritage.org/surnames/darnell/darnell.htm ....
and, a year later, Amelia Ann (DUGAN) DARNALL gave birth to my GG-grandfather, James
Albert DARNALL (6 MAR 1843), in Hendricks Co. Shortly thereafter, William and Amelia Ann
divorced and, after 1847, James was
raised by his mother and new step-father, John Mullikin. In 1856, at the age of 13, James
moved with the Mullikans to Iowa - first Jasper Co., later Madison Co.. There he met my
GG-grandma, Amanda Jane "Jennie" QUAINTANCE,
and they married in 1870 at Lynnville, Jasper Co., IA.
Our three big mystery questions are:
(1) Who were the parents and grandparents of William C. and Amelia Ann (DUGAN) DARNALL?
(2) Who were the son and grandson of John & Marianne (McDANIEL) DARNALL?
[We have a hunch that their son, Amos DARNALL, who married Martha "Patsey"
Cawood/Caywood, is our link, but that's just an educated guess]
(3) If Amos DARNALL is indeed our man, could William C. be his son? or grandson? And if
William C. is the grandson, then who was Amos's son?
Such are the mysteries haunting our family today. I will be in Hendricks & Putnam
Co.s on Friday and Saturday. Let me know if I can help you too.
Any help on the sleuthing effort will be deeply appreciated!!
