Keith's manuscript at the Newberry Library is very "deep" so I need to read
it more thorougly to cite it as a reference to Mary Cox (plus there are more than a few
Stephen Cawoods!). However, Richard Lawrence Cawood's book does list Mary Cox (dau.
of John Cox) as the wife of Stephen Cawood III (he gives the dates of this Stephen as
1670-1748).
As sons of Mary Cox and Stephen Cawood, he lists: John, William and Stephen Cawood, IV.
As daughters he lists: Ann (interesting since you say your ancestor was Mary's sister
Ann), Mary, Hester and Penelope. I am a descendant of Stephen Cawood IV (1700-1767) who
m. Eleanor (mnu). They had 3 sons Stephen V, Thomas and Benjamin who are the three
Cawoods who immigrated to America.
The Cawood lineage is very well documented by those who traveled to Cawood, Yorkshire,
England. It begins with Johannes deCawood, Cawood, England (1201-1227). Cawood is near
Selby, near the Warfe River. Johannes was the hereditary Custodian of the King's
forests between the Ouse and Derwent. The English pronounce Ca as Ke - hence the name was
pronounced in England as Keywood - the key to the the King's forests.
Enough about Cawood - hopefully, this will give you a clue about your Ann Cox!
