I have Leeds Cawleys in my family tree and am willing to look up the baptism
for you in Church records - but after Christmas - can't fit it in before
then. Were the family Catholic?
As you write John was born circe 1866, I presume you have not sent for the
birth certificate, but you can do this online. You need to got to
www.gro.gov.uk, click on "obtaining a birth certificate", then "order
certficates online". John was born in the September quarter of 1866 and you
need to quote the reference 9b 380 (this is the GRO reference, which you can
find on the
freebmd.rootsweb.com website). I would imagine the birth
certificate must name the father in order for John to have taken the
father's name.
